After hearing about how Obama is planning on creating a regulation for all vehicles, I started wondering. If there's a regulation will all cars that do not pass this regulation be taken off the road and if so is the governmant going to pay for new cars, for the people that lose theirs due to this regulation?

Personaly I think it's a great Idea BUT the reality of it has to be brought up. What's going to happen to the little guy who can't afford a new car?

The regulations are for automakers and are tougher new car standards. It shouldn't affect current cars. They've been doing this in little steps for years, but this is a larger step so it's getting more publicity.

true but the way I heard it was that ALL cars will have this regulation. I mean it'll be in 2016 but still... Is he planning on making it so that if you don't have a car up to standard will you have ot get rid of it? That's just my thoughts...

I'm assuming that older vehicles will be grandfathered in, that's how MA did it when they raised their emissions standards. Since most automobiles nowadays aren't built to last more than 10-12 years we'll probably be at close to full compliance by 2025.

Well, you heard wrong. It's on new car manufacturing, not on old cars.

The older cars will phase out just as Toddo is saying. You see hardly any cars from the 50s, 60s or 70s anymore unless they are restored classics. You only see a few from the 80s. A car that is driven regularly is only gonna be around for 10 years, 15 tops. So by 2025, your 9 year old car will be getting 36 miles a gallon.

it will not effect existing cars, it will only require that manufacturers' new vehicles being made have the new feul standards. Feul standars have be raised in the past and never has it effected existing vehicles, only new ones.

Raising the standards was something that got canceled under the Bush Administration mostly because the manufacturers kept whining about them. Yet other countries have had higher standards and are already achieving those standards. That comes off sounding like Foreign car manufacturers can do something that US companies can't. (Personally, I call BS on this score, I think they can and they should just stop their bloody whining and get on with what needs to be done!)

Americans like their big gas guzzlers. Now for everyday driving I'm all for that.

But cars like corvettes, mustangs, etc. are going to go the way of the dodo under this law. Kinda sad that. Or else they are going to be sad shells of what they used to be.

I had a 1983 Ford Mustang GL with the 5.0 5-speed manual back in the early nineties and I loved that car. However, I have a couple of friends that have '03 or '04 cars (ones a Celica GT and the other's an Eclipse). I've driven both of them, both with six cylinders, that totally out-perform my old V8 and use about 30-40% less gas. So, I hope they don't make em like they used to, cause there's no need to. Burning more fuel faster does not equal going faster/handling better/looking cooler.

Other countries can bitch about my car all they want. On the other hand, my last trip home from Texas was longer than the distance from the Atlantic in France to the old USSR borders, so I'm willing to make some emmissions sacrifices in favor of comfort and efficiency.
