If you had to classify yourself as primarily roleplay-centric or primarily combat-centric in Alliance, which would you choose? I'm curious about what people look for when they come to our game.

needs a both/mixed option. sometimes you want a little bit of everything.

That's why it's labeled as "primarily." I'm not suggesting people don't enjoy both. :) Let me put it this way:

If you have the choice between a mod you know will have stellar, engaging roleplay and a mod you know will have clean, challenging, and fun combat, which would you choose?

Depends on the character I am playing. Although, I guess I only have one now...
Doesn't that sort of make the answer "roleplay"? lol

I have a tough time with this I love both, I'd say completely equally. I've had amazing RP events leave me with the week+ post-event buzz, and I've had incredible combat events where I did nothing but meat-grinders be just the same. I really don't think I can choose - I've played RP only games (like Vampire) and found it massively lacking, and I've played events where there seems to be no good reason for the tons of good combat and found them lacking too (though, a little less so -- but I think that might have to do with the systems themselves)...

That's a really tough question and I'm not certain I could choose at all!

So I have only done one event as a NPC, but if I was a PC (and even when I am given the option as a NPC) I really prefer RP based characters. I am not terribly good at fighting, but I feel that even if I was, I would still prefer to have an RP heavy event to a fighting intensive one.

I'm also abstaining because I dislike primarily RP and combat centric LARPs.

...what? I understand not wanting a pure-combat game or a pure-RP game, but if given the opportunity to go on a mod you know will be RP based (with possibility of combat) and a mod that will be mostly combat (with the possibility of RP) which would you generally choose?

My preference is RP, which is why my primary and secondary would take the RP mods. My tertiary is for when I've filled up on RP and need to hit people with fake weapons instead of birdseed.

BOTH, depending on who else is going on the mod.

What Lauren said! I'm not trying to get too technical or too specific here, just looking at generalities and preferences. :)

There should really be a both option, as many have said.

In the PNW there are "heavy RP" games and there are "combat games". In fact there are around 15 or so successful LARPs in the area, so people really get to pick their poison. Looking for post apocalyptic, we got 2. Looking for zombies, we got 2. Hell, looking for high fantasy based on the Wizard of Oz, we got that too. I could keep listing genres but I don't wanna. ;)

From a writing standpoint, Alliance Seattle likes to be the "middle ground" of the area.

There should be an option, you're right; yes, I enjoy both RP and combat myself. However, I am asking someone to put themselves in a little thought experiment by picking just one, and it's a situation we may encounter frequently in our game anyway. Like I said before, try to put it into perspective: two mods, one with good roleplay with the potential for combat, or one with good combat with the potential to rp: which would you pick?

I'm not suggesting anything about purely combat games or purely RP games, nor am I trying to think get you to think as if you're playing one. I'm talking about our game, Alliance, as it is now as both a combat and roleplay game, and I'm asking you to make a choice based on your preferences and your experiences. I'm not suggesting both aspects of combat and roleplay don't exist or won't exist in our game.

Try not to over think it, friends! I'm not trying to push us into a moral quandry here, just answer some curiosities. :)

If there was a "both" option, it would have ninety ..... six percent of the vote. Pretty sure we all like some of each, or else we'd be doing a strictly battle game or playing tabletop.

I voted for fighting.

First, because this is my venue to do so - I can and do roleplay elsewhere, but here is where I get to physically act the part. Second, specific to a mod situation, I again don't need the module setup for that (NPCs and a hook) - other players in the tavern can provide that - so I take the combat opportunity when it presents itself.

Third, I generally prefer action in my adventure. There needs to be some story to it, but I like characters being put in danger and having to battle their way to victory. I certainly like there to be chances to use your wits and words in such situations, but there's a level of tension and imminent threat that comes with blades being drawn.

"Both" kind of is the cop-out answer here, but the question is really asking for it. If one of those things really was the primary reason, I'd play a different game. I play this one to have a good RP reason to get into padded stick fights.

Maybe "primarily" is a misleading phrasing. Maybe the intent of the question is more clear as "If you had to spend an entire event either role-playing or fighting but not both, which would you choose?" It's a hypothetical, obviously, nobody is running entire weekends devoid of both those things (that I've ever heard of, anyway).

Combat.

I love the combat.

Give me some pipe-swinging meat grinders every day.
