Hoping to Start in your LARP

Hi, my names Nathanial and me and my family are moving to Tumwater March 6th and I'm really getting interested in this game. I have been larping for almost 11 years up here in Alaska, mainly with AmtGard and a little bit of World of Darkness. I already have the rulebook and starting on a character for the game, though my persona history has be stumped at the moment. Going to bring my AmtGard persona into the game but don't know how to write his previous history from up here to be actually feasible in this game. Been using this character for 7 years now and kinda have a long history with a large amount of job changes, positions, and titles (both AmtGard offical and land based titles). Kinda looking for a little help on what is needed for a character sheet and/or history ideas. Also do you all only meet for events every couple months or is there daily runs? Kinda used to a weekly gaming setup here.

Very appreciative of any advice or suggestions you may have for me to help get me started.

Howdy Nathaniel,

First of all, welcome to Alliance. :) A typical event for us lasts an entire weekend, with game-on Friday at 8-9p, and game-off around noon on Sunday. As you can imagine, that would be very taxing on the plot team (of which I am a member) to do weekly. One of our more northern-based staff was running semi-regular fighter practices, but I'm not sure of the status of that currently. We find the weekend-long Events very fun and immersive, and worth it to travel to from, say, Eugene. Our event this weekend is a 3-day, actually. If you find that bi-monthly doesn't tickle your LARP bone as often as you'd like, there's nothing saying you have to only play with us. In particular, we try not to schedule our events for the same weekends as Shadow Accord or the Oregon chapter of Alliance (I feel like I'm missing someone).

With respect to creating your character, while you can certainly draw inspiration for a character concept from anywhere, I encourage you to start fresh with a character whose background derives from the rules and races of our system. If you still want to modify your existing character to fit the system, here are some things to think about: Why did your character leave the place where he had all these titles and lands for somewhere he knows nobody? We have "the mists", which is how characters travel from campaign to campaign in Alliance, and they don't always take you where you want to go, so that could be something. Also to keep in mind, your character will still start at level 1-2, so if he came from somewhere he was a paragon of greatness, everyone there must've sucked, or he lost his skills somehow. It could be as simple as, he was out for a stroll in the mists, when they took him to Andar, where everyone's super good at fighting and magic. That might not get you the bonus background build, though.

But really, you should have a back story that ties your character to the game world, rather than establishing him as an outsider. If you tell us (plot@alliance-seattle.com) some basic things about what kind of character you want to play, we can send you some additional information that isn't in the book about the race you chose, and some cultural information if you want to have originated in Andar, that you can use to shape your character's story.

Hope that helps!

Actually that does help, thank you! I think ill just start from scratch with this character or use another character idea i had that may be alot easier to build. Since I wont be down there for about 3 more weeks i do have some time to work it all out.

SF!

The travel isn't as heavy as it used to be, but in the interest of making the option available since SF to Seattle is easier than anything east of the rockies, we still make it a point to try and not conflict. Accidents will happen and stuff will come up (like that boy scout jamboree that popped up on our site last year >.<') but in general we try to facilitate as much cross chapter play as we can.

Well I have my first character done, just dont know what you guys town is called to finish it up. Also, what is your lands rules on small children at events?

EDIT: Read another post about childern and answered my own question.

The country Alliance Seattle is set in is called Andar. Within Andar there are several towns that we have events set in and more towns that are referenced. Your character can be from anywhere in Andar, or the game world (Neighboring countries). The capitol of Andar is Silverford and the most recent events have been set in Iron Falls and Westgate. Here is a map of Andar and her neighboring countries: http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x157 ... Final2.jpg

Well the nice thing about our system is you get 2 free deaths. That means you rez without chance of dying forever. Check the rulebook for more information on death and dying. :D
