I'm sorry to mention this, but another larp related film...

"Wild Hunt"

Many of the initial impressions seem quite positive, even from (supposed) larpers, and has won a couple awards in Canada However, the creators decided to take a more "slasher film" tone for the trailer, and I'm finding it a tad, well, disturbing.

The trailer seems to run counter to what is supposedly portrayed in the film.
"And their view of LARPers is overwhelmingly positive. 'They are the most peaceful people,' Franchi says. 'I think humans have a desire to experience true emotions — honour and love and romanticism. They commune with nature and huddle around the fire. We’ve lost this in our society.' ”

"When The Lord of the Rings trades punches with Lord of the Flies, you get a film called The Wild Hunt."

Whatever the case may be, I'm hoping to check it out. The entire premise is based around a more European-style LARP that exists in Canada, called "Bicolline", but the creators are NOT larpers themselvse. They actually filmed some of the footage at one of the gatherings that hosts over 2,000 players, and so the movie is at times depicting Canadian larpers in a giant field battle, or in another scene a group of drunken players dancing in a tavern.

So, it's obviously not the same environment, game system, or mind set that we play in, but it's still relevant to the hobby. Especially with such a dark, sensationalistic trailer, I wonder if some people might never see the film, and form an opinion of LARP based off of this preview alone.

Guys, bear in mind this is not a documentary nor are they publicizing it as one. It's an indie feature that they admit was promo'ed in a darker fashion then they wanted.

Seeing that promo... I'd see the movie... sounds good. I'd also see the dark movie the trailer is apparently trying to make it look like.

However, if people see that trailer and think that's how all LARPS go down... then it's not exactly good for PR. Especially if they don't watch the move to see Larpers presented as the creators wanted, not as they are presented in the trailer.

And because it's kinda related.... my favorite misleading trailer of all time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmkVWuP_sO0

It's fun for the whole family and the feel-good movie of the year.

"I'm not gonna hurt-cha. I'm just gonna bash your f@$+ing head in. Bash it right the f@%# in!"

Best. Line. Ever.

Hmmmm... I'm tempted to say that this could be good publicity. Those people who see LARPing as nerdy mite get a better idea of LARP intencity. Of course it mite attract a breed of melicous killers!

As for little Timmy's first event after mom sees the movie.... Maby not so good...

I'v alwayse imagined that there would be an Office style Tv show about LARPers... Only in a perfect world I guess.

About twice a year, I get a twitch from a production company about making a LARP based TV show where there would be something like a two week long LARP that would be broken down into 14 one hour "Reality TV" shows and then the next season would have a new setting - so you'd have fantasy one time, sci-fi the next, Pirate, Zorro esque, Amazonian, etc.

Im a bigger fan of scary poppins

Does no one else find that first trailer very disturbing? Maybe I'm missing something here.

It is no more disturbing than many other movies that has some one or some group go over the top/deep edge of a make believe 'game' and turn it into reality for them. I'm sure that if you saw the interrogation/**** scene in the GI Jane trailer, you'd probably be just as disturbed. It's just that this one hits closer to home because we are all in the hobby.

What you see in the trailer is the darkness and drama that drives people to see a movie - such as the beginnings of the **** scene in the trailer. However, without seeing the movie, I can't tell if players come to her rescue and mayhaps even throw a little chivalric code into it.

Whether it's a good movie or not doesn't matter to me as much as the image of larping it presents. Far more people will see the trailer than the actual movie. For many of them, this will be their first experience with larping, and their sense of what larping is about will be shaped by it. This is a VERY, VERY BAD THING.

... unless you believe that larping would be better without women.

People said the same thing about "Role Models" however it had as a technical advisor a pretty well known LARPer in the LA region so the movie came out actually having people want to start LARPing. Now granted, a comedy and drama are two different animals but until I see the actual movie, I'm holding off my critiques. Could it have been a more "LARPer friendly" trailer? Sure. But would it have sold the idea of the movie and generated more attendees? I don't think so and the producer of the film is in the film entertainment industry not the LARP industry. Not to mention that if this does begin to get any sort of media coverage, we can respond to it with our viewpoint on the hobby.

I currently know of one individual who is "in the industry" in LA who is seeing about getting a disclaimer put onto the US DVD packaging about it not being a realistic representation of the activities that happen at a LARP and the people who attend them.

Oh, and as for the final sentence. No, nope, NO a thousand times no! In fact, bring more women! I'm tired of huddling around a fire with people who could snore the bones off a lich!

I really can't describe how angry this trailer makes me.

This is not to pass judgement on anyone who liked it, merely to express my very strong feelings of dislike.

For the sake of refraining from saying things I will regret, that is all.

It looks like an awesome movie, and a truly-screwed up and terrible advertisement for larping in general. Much like Friday the 13th was a terrible way to sell the idea of camping.

In the end it is a fictional movie. It looks awesome. I love dark film. Just because it involves our hobby doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad thing. I doubt anyone is going to see this and think, "I wonder how those LARP groups get away with ritualistic **** and murder?" It is on the same level with believing Harry Potter is a representation of witch craft. People will sensationalize anything if they can find something to get upset about. If this movie deters a person from LARPing then they probably wouldn't have enjoyed the game to begin with. Just my opinion.

The trailer reminds me of how D&D used to be thought of in the 80's.

I agree...
