I'm such a newbie...

RedRogue

Newbie
Ok, I am so newbie that I can't even find what I am looking for here cuz everyone seems to know what's going on but moi..

Although I kinda gather LARPer's don't especially like LARP movies, that's exactly what brought me here.

I wanna play! I have skillz to bring to the table!

Where and how do I get started/involved? Do I just show up to an event? Are untrained, total 100% newbs welcome?

Please don't abuse me for my questions, but laughing is allowed.

Thanks!

first, where exactly are you located?

and second, welcome!

you can just show up to an event 100% untrained, newbs will be taught.

your locations says you're in Ohio, so i'm figuring the closest chapter would be Vandlar. Here's the address of their webpage: http://www.alliancelarpohio.net/

if you correspond with them there, or on the Ohio forum here, they'll get you all situated. you won't need much gear for your first few weekends (general camping stuff will suffice) and maybe a make-shift costume (scrubs and pocketless pants work wonders). once there, the good people in Vandlar (and they are good people) will hook you right up

The best thing to do, seriously, is get a Rule Book. Not only does it have the actual rules of the game, but there are huge sections describing how the game is played, giving examples, and letting a new player know just about everything you need to in order to have a good time at the first event.

If you don't want to shell out $20 for a paperback, you can get the downloadable version for about $5.

Yeah, this suggestion WOULD come from the autor  Kind of like having a Tea-hadist offer to sell you tickets to a Sarah Palin concert.

(Really -- just kidding)

Yeah, the first thing I have always suggested to new players is get the Rule Book, Read it completely once through. Go back and read the sections that you find most interesting. Prepare to have fun at the Chapter (game) closest to you. If you contact the folks at the Chapter you will easily find people who will talk to you on the phone, in person, on Facebook, by email, etc. You might even find people who can help you with costuming, weapons, etc.

Really, we are a bunch of helpful, friendly, courteous, and kind people (and some of us are even Boy Scouts).

So, having taken the first step (posting here) you are on your way to a new world of fun. I've been doing this for about 6 years, and I never before played D&D or other tabletop game, World of Warcraft or other MMORG online game, or any other LARPs ... and except about 10 years of being part-time and occassional Ren Faire entertainment I had never played any games anything like Alliance. It's a blast. You can make many friends ... and some people have even met and married other players they met in the game.
