I'm looking to be an Artisan. I know of the suggestions in the book but would like to know what kind of services would be welcomed in game.

If your from SoMN what services are already being provied?

what was the coolest Artisan/merchant that you saw in the past?

I had a few Ideas;
Doing after battle portraits with your kill, I have some art skill. Or maybe Fortune cookies, get a cookie and your fortune told. Or Emergency tailor, if I bring a sewing kit to repair costumes.

I was thinking a fee somewhere in the 2-5 copper range for each of these services, does that seem too high or low?

Well, as a semi-sleazy food and drink merchant from SoMN, it's good to see more of us Merchanty types (I'm a fighter, but being greedy and sleazy is Gandian's life) around Gaden! As far as actually business goes in SoMN, there's not actually too many services other than the selling of foodstuffs, so pretty much whatever you do would probably be welcome, even if it's just more foodstuffs (we like to eat, you know).

As far as pricing, you kind of have to just find out in game. If your price is too high, folks won't buy it. If it's too low, you'll give out more for less than you could have made. Think of an initial, reasonable price then just go from there.

I like all those ideas - but especially nice IG portraits ought to sell (though I don't know Minnesota). I get this picture of someone with an easel standing 20 yards behind the battle lines getting busy with their pencils or whatever. Then telling the story of the battle along with some pictures after and then auctioning off the drawings.

I would like to point out that none of those ideas indicate you should be an artisan. Any class can do battle portraits or sew as it will depend entirely on your OOG skill and have nothing to do with the build you spend. If it were me I would go scholar and drop a circle of power (eventually) so I could draw uninterrupted!

The artisan class is probably for characters who want to craft weapons / armor, potions, scrolls, and alchemy (didn't do the math but you'd want at least 2 of those for artisan to make sense build-wise).

I'm now having visions of a high ogre named Bah'brosse painting "happy little clouds" while taking hallucinate elixers.

He's right; you don't need to be an Artisan to be a merchant (like I said before, my character is a merchant, and he's a fighter, and he might even go templar soon, so it doesn't really matter what class you go into). If you want to produce game items (weapons, alchemy, etc.) as something your character does, as well as other services, then you should go Artisan. Otherwise, I as well recommend simply going into another class and just roleplaying your merchant-ness.

Personally, I'd think you'd be able to sell portraits for a good sum of coin/other goods, considering the effort on your part. When are you planning on starting in SoMN, just out of curiosity?

Well, my day has officially been made.

I was thinking Artisan because of not liking the fighting and I know that I can't throw. And it was suggested to me earlier. Plus I was going to donate a lot of Tartans and Spell packets to earn the goblin notes then in turn use those for production points. Make a few healing alchemy and give those away for people in need.

The way I role play I enjoy the short comings as much as the advantages of any given class or race. It gives you more to work with. But I will read up on the Magic class next then, protection circle you say...

I'll be starting in SoMN at the next game in July. Feel free to contact me, my marshal hasn't in some time and I have SoMN specific questions too.

Do games Need Real Life First-aiders too?
I think I'm still certified, CPR ran out though.

Try posting this in the SoMN out-of-game section. Look under "Chapters."

There are plenty of scholars who can't throw - healing and protective spells can be touch-cast so if you want to give out healing to people in need, you might consider earth scholar. They can can memorize healing spells cheaper than an artisan and can learn potion making as cheap as an artisan though if you plan on using goblin stamps to "make" potions there's no reason to spend build on potion making (unless you find you need more and more potions).

The spell I was talking about was the 9th level "circle of power" - perfect for protecting that art from monsters and such...

My primary is a Scholar, and is a Master Potions Maker and Master Scroll Maker (writer) (20 levels of CREATE SCROLLS and 20 levels of CREATE POTIONS), and is almost finished with a full Earth column of spells. It has taken a long time to get here ... so I am not recommending that you try all of this at once.

If you want to be a maker of potions and scrolls, you only need a tiny bit of EARTH and CELESTIAL magic. But if you also want to CREATE other things (like weapons and armor or traps or alchemistry) then Artisan will be the way to go.

Another approach is to be a scholar and be a straight Earth "caster" and use touch casting for much of what you do. You can "learn" CURE spells (Cure Mortal Wounds, Cure Wounds, etc), and protectives such as Spell Shield, Magic Armor, Poison Shield, Elemental Shield and Bless, and curatives - such as Awaken and Purify There is a hole at 7th level as these spells are not easily touch cast, but if you can get close enough to the other person, it's not too hard to use these as defensive spells by tossing a spell pack the 2 or 3 feet you might need to make these useful.

Once you get to Formal Magic (above ninth level) there are all kinds of neat High Magic "powers" for Earth magic users. I love REBIRTH -- it is a life saver for yourself (a kind of automatic life spell) as well as things like Earth's Bount and Healers Resolve - as well as spellcrafting.

There is a lot you can do as a non-casting Earth Scholar with packets in hand which do not require you to be on the front line of battle. However, in the chapters where I have played, it is not too easy to convince people to pay you for your healing skills. If making coin is your real goal, than be an artisan and make things (potions, scrolls, armor, weapons, traps, and alchemy). Alchemy can be a real money maker, as can potions and scrolls, because these are consumables which are valuable to the fighters who are out on the front lines collecting treasure.

Remember that you need a secure place to keep your wares. Get to be friends with a Celstialist who can cast a Ward for you, or join a team who will provide you with a ward.
