Knights of Badassdom

So, another LARP movie... trailer looks interesting to say the least...

One Pro to this movie is that it has some big names in it. On Con is that it still associates LARPing with some bad juju, as players start showing up dead during the movie.

I think we're still a ways off from any major films where LARPing is presented as just something that some people do. Our Brokeback Mountain isn't coming next year.

Not to say that LARPers face the levels of persecution or hatred that homosexuals have. It's just a convenient analog.

It looks a hell of a lot better than the new Seven Eleven commercial, which is a homage to every negative nerd/geek stereotype.

What I pulled from this trailer: The opening scene shows that the main character lives in a pretty awesome house and has a custom larp van. So it may very well be that he is financially successful and not living in mom's basement. Stereotype hopefully broken.

The larp they are playing has awesome production value as a game and they look pretty cool doing it. Even the comic relief, like the king in the scooter chariot and the little person look visually impressive. To me, that's a good thing. The main characters all seem to speak well and are attractive and very attractive people.

The other good thing is, even with the seven eleven commercial and now this, LARP is getting some mainstream time. An advertiser thought it was well known enough to put in a commercial, which is pretty awesome. I wish they had made it less stereotyping, but oh well.

As for larpers dying, it's a horror comedy hybrid. People died in Sean of the Dead too. I think it's a good fit for a larp movie that has the potential to show larpers as pretty cool.

After seeing the trailer, I'm definitely going to go see this movie when it comes out.

I'm with Scott on this one.

We're a ways off from a full length feature film that doesn't lampoon LARPing a little bit. But, let's be honest with ourselves here. What we do IS a little silly. Its awesome. I love it. But, we shouldn't take ourselves so seriously.

The positives on this movie in regards to its representation of what we do FAR outweigh the negatives.

Also... if I ever end up wheelchair bound.... I'm rocking a chariot like that guy. Just sayin'.

Yeah, I didn't get the impression that they were really using the film to make fun of LARPers. I mean, of course it's a bit silly -- but the characters didn't seem to be stereotypes.

And it has Peter Dinklage!!!

Honestly? I think it looks funny as hell. I'm pretty excited.

I actually know some folks that ended up in this movie. Eric Pope, who's very big in the Zombie and LARPing scene out on the west coast plays one of the minions that get summoned up. He hung out with the cast and director a lot, and definitely gave the impression when he was done that this was going to be an entertaining movie, less about LARP and more using a LARP as the base setting for the campy horror to follow.

So, it's really less a LARP movie and more a campy horror movie. :D

Personally, I feel that them poking humor at all of the stereotypes of LARPers is the best part of the recent string of LARP movies. It desensitizes people to it and makes it look fun. And let's all be honest, after every event there is at least one thing that all of us will laugh at and poke fun at that was horribly stereotypical of LARP nerds and the reason it's so funny is because it's real.

The LARP Alliance (Not Alliance LARP) was on set for the filming of this movie. We made sure that LARPing was portrayed as accurately and as in favorable of a light as possible. The producers of the movie didn't want to make fun of the game as they feel it is really an interesting way to express one's creativity and still keep ahold of that child inside of you who used to play 'cowboys and indians' when they were younger. We tried to do our best to keep things to a perspective of how enjoyable LARPing really is.

I"m a bit upset that I couldn't actually be on site for it but my two fellow BoD from LARP Alliance, Rick McCoy and Adrienne Grady, had worked on Role Models as technical advisors and did a phenomenal job of getting the movie up to LARPing snuff. During the presentation at Comic Con, they, the LARP Alliance and LARPing in general received as much, if not more attention than the actors and other topics of the movie.

One thing Adrienne said was interesting was when Peter Dinklage left after wrap-up to go shoot Game of Thrones. Then, as with many movies, Knights had to reshoot a couple of scenes and having him show up with a dye job of bright blonde hair had everyone doing a double take.

You can read more about how LARPing was incorporated into the movie at the below link.
