Kobolds

I'm thinking of one of my next mask projects being a kobold or a goblin. I know of many ideas for goblins, but the physical description clash with artwork of kobolds still has me confused. What the heck does a kobold look like?!? I have had them described IG to me as "Lupine" but almost all artwork I've found is much more lizard-like than wolf-like. Would anyone be able to give me a fairly descriptive answer?

(If you'd like to see some of my leatherwork, it is posted in the Fiction and Art forum folder under Mask-Making)

a kobold allways seemed to me to have a lizard face,
if you want a good picture, check out the wizards of the coast website, the makers of dungeons and dragons http://www.wizardsofthecoast.com
or im sure you can google image it too

This alas conflicts directly with the monster database, I'd suggest checking with the campaigns theses masks will be used for as there is some local variation.

The original kobold look is from way back with the original monster manual from advanced dungeons and dragons. They tended to have more of a dog's muzzle and face with lizard scales and spikes - I couldn't find a direct picture of it but here is someone else's drawing that is close to it:

However, as time passed on, the kobold became more lizard like and less 'puppy dog'.

As for myself, I"m an old schooler and made my masks to resemble the old school Kobolds. I did it mostly because I had seen kobolds portrayed more 'puppy/cute' like by LARP groups (Alliance included) to the point that characters try to keep them as pets. Also the original monster database was based upon first and second edition D&D where you get the puppy kobold.

I'd think there wouldn't be a huge problem for an individual chapter to "tweak" their database to take advantage of some really awesome masks. At the worst come up with a slightly different monster type that it made sense for. But I'd think its easier to work with the IG explanation for the sake of really nice props than take the hours of time to change all the props.

Of course all this is mute if you can change the way the props are built easily before they are done.

go anyways! lots of friends and fun! :)

Thanks, Fenwi, for helping to illustrate many a point I have made - how decisions are often based upon the quality of the game and not just on how big your imagination can be. ;)

Thanks Scott! Too bad I still haven't heard from the National event committee. Imagine having 40+ of these guys running at the town. :)

Mark, we're working on it. Please allow for the fact that there has been a very large transition in the last few weeks, and it takes time for organization to happen.

I can allow just about anything as long as it is understood that when something is asked for, I may no longer have the time to create it. I have been extraordinarily busy as of late due to the acceptance of latex weaponry and will not put on hold people who are paying for their items for donated ones. Sorry if I seem pushy, just trying to make the national event a very memorable one.

0.0 That would actually really tempt me into going to the national event. I love well-repped games
You should come back out here and hit more Oregon games then, they use several of Mark's masks, and a bunch of their own (that are also very nice) for common critters (kobalds, spiders, goblins, undead, etc). I very rarely ask "What do I see" there.

Kobold is the German word for goblin. so i would assume that the lizard dog is pretty darn close. but pre dnd (way way way back) it was a doglike creature.

When I first began getting into Alliance that translation confused me terribly. I could (at the time) speak pretty decent German, and had read the LOTR series so I knew the word Kobold as NOTHING remotely like what they are in Alliance.

I have kept checking into it today, and it seems only dnd and warcraft use the lizard style. while they are both huge, pretty much everything else uses dogs or little people (like leprechauns)

my home chapter they use fox-like masks, and that's always what I had assumed
