Hi Everybody
I just thought I'd post and explain a little something here...
A few folks sent in writeups wherein their character writes a letter to an NPC. Most times when we receive these, the response will be "The NPC will speak to you in-game."
We do this for a few reasons. Firstly, we are a LIVE Roleplaying game. Very often what is in those letters requires a conversation of some sort - and going back and forth in letters is very cumbersome for that. Second, we'd prefer to give you an encounter at the game, then email each other back and forth. We don't run an internet based game. Third, that encounter might entertain other people as well - then everybody wins.
So then, what is writing to an NPC good for? Getting plot!
If you write a letter to an NPC it lets us know you want speak to a particular person, and we can prepare to have that NPC available - particularly if it's somebody who's not normally at every event. That person can then also be prepared to discuss whatever it is you were looking to talk about - sometimes that involves prep/discussions with plot, as all NPCs are plot controlled, regardless of who plays the character.
As a second point, if you write a letter to an NPC, please actually WRITE the letter! This may sound silly, but we get a lot of writeups that say "I write a letter to the sherrif and tell him X." If you actually write the letter "Dear so-and-so, I have something I wish to discuss with you...." we can be a lot clearer on what the person will be discussing and you're more likely to get the information you're looking for.
If the letter is very vague (or any writeup for that matter), you're probably going to get a vague response because we're not sure what you want. Note that you're never guaranteed to get information, but it's hard to give people what they're looking for, when you're not sure what they're looking for in the first place.
That all being said, we are finishing up getting your writeups to you. Thanks for your patience.
