any good sources or tips?

With makeup alone I keep getting 'cougar' which, while it creates some fun jokes, is not the preferred answer.

Anyone out there played with fabric, or layered wigs?

If you're looking for a 'mane mane', you can always try this part of Northfur:

They might be able to rig some sort of lion hood for you.

I would also maybe make the recommendation of seeing if anyone has the 'vincent' wig from beauty and the beast. Cosplay sites such as these might be a good place to go for it:

You want something shaggy, but well kept. Another way to dodge the cougar comment is probably a tail with the puff at the end of it. Once again, recommending northfur:

These usually have a belt loop built in at the top, which makes wearing it easy. You'll find the short pile/long pile fur combo toward the bottom.
