This has been something that I have been advocating for a while now. One of the biggest lessons I learned from the recent economy is that you need to look out for yourself. Build up "resume-able" skills, and keep your resume updated.
Working in HR, I had the "privilege" of working on the inside planning large-scale reduction in workforces only to find that I was also subject to them. It doesn't matter who you know, or the projects you are working on, in the end you can and will be expendable at some level.
Unless you are in a union, the longer you work at a company or location, does not guarantee that you will continue to work there. We are even seeing this occurr within unions as well (check out WI).
So in short, this type of article is old news, and has already been well-established.
If this is "new" news to you, I would suggest you take a look at your current situation and see if a change is right for you (especially with the job market heating up the way it is).
Sorry for the rant, but wanted to pass this along to anyone who would care to read it.
