Making a spear

OK, so I'll be making a new spear when I get back from kentucky and I was wondering about some legality issues with it and if it would get passed:

I'll be making a rose, basically. The stem of the rose is the shaft of the spear, the butt-end would be the flower head itself and the thrusting tip would be the end of the stem "sharpened" into a weapon. I figure that this much would be fine, however there was one part I wanted to add to help make it a "rose". Thorns. Will there be any issues with decorative OPEN CELL thorns adorning the length of the shaft? And if so, what specifics can I use to go about making them work?

I was under the assumption that as long as they arent long or actually pointed that they could work. You know, like little brown nubs or somthing?

What do you think as far as the idea and how it would be passed if made like this?

Whether or not it would be passed is really a matter of the overall legality of construction and safety of the weapon.

I have a concern that the 'flower' on the butt end will violate the thrusting tip requirements, but it really comes down to how you build it. You should find a way to build the flower into the pommel, perhaps, and have the thrusting tip extend out from there.

As for the thrusting end, remember that it does need to have a head on it, something substantial that will make it easily differentiable from an edged weapon.

Other than that, I can't see anything in your planning that would need to be taken into account during a safety check. The open cell 'thorns' sound perfectly fine to me.

I think were thinking of the same concept: I planned on making it like so:

@}========================>
Rose stem Thrusting tip

like that. So that way, the pommel itself, the butt-end, or useless lump of poop that I'll call a counter-balance will be the rose head. and the sharp end of the spear will be the bottom of the stem, which will be fashioned maybe with two leaves to give it more of a "spear head" look. Who knows, I'll experiment when I get home.

The costume for the NEW CHARACTER to go with it will be deep navy blue and white so what color would you recommend for the rose head? White? to match the outfit, or would Red give more of an offset that makes for a more colorful overall appearance...?

RED ROSE!

So its all differant and stuff. =p Then again, you could do like a yellow rose or something

I was thinking red in the first place, just one of my friends mentioned the idea of white. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with a shield yet. It may end up being a leaf or somthing. But I dont want to go overboard with the nature thing. Maybe a big shield with a picture of happy little puppies playing togather

Well based on what I know of the character and what I know about the meanings behind the colors of roses, I would say the best colors would be:

Pink
Coral
Purple
Lavendar

In that order. Certainly not a mandate, just a suggestion... red or white would be fine too. We can talk about it more.

Any ideas on a good shield to go with it? And yes, perhaps Jim and I will talk more indepth about this part when discussing the character himself. But any ideas?

WOAH!!! That place has glowing tape! Can we use that on magic swords?

I don't know. You could always buy some and let a marshal look at it before applying to weapons. I can't tell what it's made out of from their site. Course, you could always email them and ask too.

If nothing else, you'd have really cool tape!

Notes on the Glow Tape:

Glow Tape
Economy (Novelty) Grade Glow Tape, glows in total darkness, brite light will fully charge within 5 minutes. Glows brightest for the first 10 minutes.

Glow Tape 1" x 10 yds (5 day lead time) $8.75

Premium Glow Tape
Much brighter than standard. Glows for 8+ hours. It has greater durability and passes flame, smoke, and toxicity tests. Ideal for marking evacuation routes.

PGD-8HE 1" x 50 yds ** 3 DAY LEAD TIME $88.40

This stuff kinda looks like masking tape to me. I'm not sure how many 'recharges' they have or how durable they are, but I know for a fact that you can get clear duct tape, so maybe you can put this stuff on your weapon in limited amounts and then put the clear over it. (I say limited so that your clear duct tape still has somewhere to grip onto, without having to rely on the glow tape's gripping ability).

As a note, that stuff's green, so you'd still have to have the white

At halloween time you can get cloth spray that works okay for glow in the darkiness, and it's $3 a can. Figure even if you use a can an event that's under $30 a year and you can use it on a cloth covered weapon. Just a thought.
