Mundane Light Sources

What is the general opinion on NON-magical light sources in-game?

I see two potential problems when it comes to this subject.
1. Fire hazard An open flame or an oil lamp is a considerable liability.
2. Brightness An inappropriate level of light would be removing the usefulness of the "Light" spell.

I have an interest in bringing a small enclosed candlelit lantern with me to an upcoming game day.
The level of light produced is very low, and the risk of a spreading flame is next to nil.
Do you think that this is acceptable practice, or does it negatively effect the game?

You would have to ask your chapter owner or GM, as it varies by chapter. Usually the determining factor is whether the site you're using allows open or enclosed flames to be carried about.

HQ allows battery operated period looking lanterns. this does not at all reduce the effectivness of liquid light and light spells because no one brings a lantern into battle. they are usually there for cabins and what not.

I took a battery operated candle (had to cut it down) and got a old lantern
removed the glass for extra safty and woola a battery operated perfectly safe Lantern!

the candle was $7 and the Lantern was $5 add cost of battries and its less then $20

I found a solar-powered, period-looking lantern at Home Depot last year for around $30 IIRC. Looks great and I was told I didn't need a tag to use it to get around in the dark since it was, essentially, a "real" lantern. I can't fight with it in my hand so there is that hindrance to deal with. It dos help prevent breaking/twisting any needed body parts due to missteps in the dark.

I have seen flashlights have being used so long as they are diffused with shirts or something. But maybe that's with a light spell or liquid light....

You are correct, usually a diffused flashlight is a rep for a light spell.
