My spiffy Chain Mail

The welded mesh looks nice, but IMHO it wouldn't stop a sneeze. I prefer to make my own and it looks more realistic. Just my $0.02
In regards to the weight issue of wearing 'realistic' maille, grow stronger.

Better than some armour phys reps

It is better than just taking a fabric that looks metalic and and calling it armour.
I do think that half hung looks better than full hung. In regards to making it your self it does take a lot of work, but it is worth it. Last weekend finished a vest for my brother to wear. I started it in September of 2004. It is 12 lbs, which I don't think is that heavy, but is is heavier than the 6 or 7 lb shirts that are being sold above. As for cost I have heard chainmaille shirt go for about $300-$350. The link above is selling their shirts for around $200.
It still looks good.

It is not suppose to stop anything, it is a fantasy game it is suppose to look good. I also know of a few people who have back problems and cannot wear 20 pounds of chainmail.

I'll keep that in mind for HACA or SCA, but for NERO, it's an unnecessary encumberance, IMO. The only "need" armour provides in NERO is to look cool, and maybe stop the odd scrape or bruise from falling on in the dirt, or possibly a tree at worst. Somehow, I doubt that the welded mesh will fail to prevent that open-cell foam, kitespar-cored axe from cutting me in twain.

JP, Do your recall Andra King and her plate mail and 'great' helm which for years and years was made of Tinfoil carefully folded over shaped cut out pieces of cardboard? The cardboard incidently came from boxes of 'Cheerio's' and 'Special K' cereal. Do you ever recall seeing her in Nero Mass?

It always made me smile.

I think that's what armor is suppose to do. It makes people smile because it shows they're trying based on their time, economic situation, skill, and passion. Andra's tinfoil armor was cool. It couldn't hold up against the demand place on it by boffer weapons' over a weekend and she had to repair constantly. Which oddly enough produced the best recreation (IMHO) of platemail armor i've ever seen because she would go back to her cabin and empty a another box of cereal and repair her armor.

It still makes me smile just to think about it (in a good way).

If I could only afford Titanium That would be nice and light, but out of period.

I do happen to have a 'back problem' and I'm still able to wear a 25# shirt of maille. One of the first things that I put on is a back brace. Another way to enable yourself to wear a maille shirt, is to make sure that your sword-belt is on nice & tight and that will take the place of the back brace. The main 'problem' that I've seen with the welded mesh is that when you manage to snag the rings on something, you need someone who can make micro-maille in order to get the shirt repaired.

Yeah, I recall that. It was cool since she could rep her "battle damage" and repair efforts. :)

I've seen a number of nice faux armor sets. A couple of years back, I reconnected with the guy that played the Brigadier General (Richard? name fails me for now), who put together a decent how-to on sculpted plate armor out of cardboard and fiberglass. The stuff looks amazing, and is fairly easy to do. Wouldn't stop much beyond mud in yer eye, but a great effort for recreating the *appearance* of good armour.

Look good, have fun. If having fun includes making your shoulders ache and bragging about how you carry more weight on your shoulders every weekend than your wife does pregnant, more power to you, but don't poo-poo us table nerds and desk jockeys looking to get any exercise.

I have a back problem too. But I don't have any desire to make it worse then it is. And wearing 25 lbs of chain maille is going to make my back worse. The whole point is to have the look of realistic armour, not actually having to wear it, It is a fantasy game, not SCA or Ren Faire.

Hey that is your choice, but for the rest of us that don't want to deal with the pain and aches of a bad back these shirts are great.

If the idea is authenticity, then wouldn't it be better to tackle the more glaring issues of garb such as those wearing 'raver pants' and 'combat boots'? If the point is that our characters live and exist in a fantasical world, with say ogers and trolls and elves, then I would think that everything is fine. Personally i believe in the light wieght armor because folks like Lee-anne (sp?) and Val could wear the light weight armors if they wished and still participate without further aggrevaiting their help issues.

Do we really want to errect yet further barriers to new and current players? I don't think so. If some one wishes to go the extra distance, I say applaud them, but let's not 'tsk tsk' the others.

That'ss my 2 cents
