Hello!

As a player finally entering BroS, my character shell is somewhat above 42 XP (only 49, probably a bit more by game just because of Monthly Blankets).

I expect my starting gear is based off my Actual XP, even if i am playing down to 42 XP. Is that correct?
 
That is correct, you would start with 296 (49 * 4 + 100) gear points. If you use any of that to buy a magic item, it is still not consider a "Broken Shards" item and will not be admitted.
 
Feel free to come in with production/coin as you see fit however. Magic items are very tightly controlled for Broken Shards and must either be created or found in campaign.

To put any concerns at ease, the character is only going to come into game with three things: Garb, personality, and production items. :)

Oh. And coin. I guess four things.
 
It's that second one that concerns me... ;)
