As many of you know, there is an engineer coming to Hope's Reach to help with the building and design of walls, watch towers, and other defensive structures to help defend both the immediate area near the tavern (which was a fort when it was first commissioned, and why the site was chosen), and the nearby farms and town from any corrupt attacks. In preparation for his arrival, I have been asked to help make a preliminary sketch of our town's defensive plans, identifying the best areas to place walls, bastions, trenches and other choke points for our troops. As well, we need to identify the best placement of watch towers and signal towers to alert of any attacks as quickly as possible and protect or evacuate the local citizens when the time comes.
I know I am in no position, nor do I have any authority, to force anything but a discussion about this topic, but I believe it is important enough to warrant input from those who would not only benefit from these defenses, but would likely be charged with helping defend them.
This will require a lot of planning, and will be especially be reliant on getting an accurate mapping of the areas being defended. I know the local military has a few maps on hand, but I have yet to be informed of any that are in enough detail for the task at hand, though I would be happy to be proven wrong. In any case, I believe that a fresh look at the area, especially the town and who we have to defend in it, would greatly aid in any engineering project that we begin on, and would like to deliver our first draft of our plans to the engineer when he arrives to both make the project finish faster, and be more effective in completing it's goals.
With that in mind, I am hoping that there are people with a better knowledge of the town and it's surroundings that could help with the surveying that's needed. I know asking for people's time like this could be considered rude, but I'm sure whatever work could get done would be appreciated. I would like to open up this discussion to find out what we can do before the next market day, what information we will be lacking in, and listen to any suggestions or discussions about what kind of defenses would be best suited for this task.
On a final note, while I will be sending my work to the tavern by messenger next market day, I will not be there in person, and so would like someone else (if possible) to help organize any maps/sketches/suggestions for the engineer when he arrives.
I would also thank you guys ahead of time for any help or suggestions you have to offer to help with this task.
