Hail!

My name is John Perkins and I plan on joining the Ashbury chapter of Alliance. I've been playing Dagorhir for around two years now, so I'm familar with boffer fighting (if on a looser ruleset and harder hitting level). I've had some brief experience with LARPing and RP in general, but nothing like Alliance. I mostly know what I want to do with my character, but I'm looking for help and clarification on a couple things. The rulebook is quite extensive and I want to learn what I can before I attend an event. I'm will be going to the April event as an PC currently since I have an extensive wardrobe of garb, gear, and even armor.

Couple of questions...

#1 - If I join as an PC would I be be able to use my current Dagorhir weapons until I am able to create Alliance LARP style ones? I'm also interested if latex weapons are allowed.

#2 - Who do I talk to to get information about Dark Elves in the world currently? I'd like to have a backstory written and submitted before the April event.

#3 - I sent in via Paypal the yearly dues and also put in a donation on the Kickstarter page. Will I be able to use the Gobbies from the Kickstarter to buy back any events for my character? And can someone explain the magic item part too? (I donated $50 for reference)

#4 - Since I will be a PC, what does the event fee cover? (Example: Is food provided or do I need to bring all my food?)

#5 - Did I miss any super important things?! Please comment away!

Hate to spam all these questions, but they are important ones.

Any help would be greatly appericated!

Respectfully,
John Perkins

Hi John,
My name is Mike and I am a 20 year veteran. Despite that, I'm still not 100% on all of the answers to your questions, but I think I generally know the answers.

1) I don't know what Dagorhir weapons look like specifically, but in my experience, the weapons from harder hitting LARPs do not pass our game. You can check them against the guidelines in the book and see if they match, but my recommendation is to assume they won't pass our safety inspections. In fact, the weapons brought in by most first time PCs usually fail. NPC camp will usually be willing to loan you a weapon for your first game as a PC, but if you can afford it, I would recommend trying to commission a weapon from one of the many foamsmiths on these boards. Alliance does allow SOME latex weapons, but not all, and each chapter has different rules for what is allowed when it comes to latex. There are only a few marshals in HQ that can approve latex weapons. The best advice I have for latex is to talk to one of those marshals BEFORE buying any latex weapon and give them a chance to pre-check the weapon.

2) If you are creating a Dark Elf, you can contact plot (see staff e-mail in stickied threads at top of forum) and request a racial packet. In addition, posting here out of game looking for Dark Elf characters to build a story with will almost certainly get responses. You probably can't send or receive PMs yet, so you should probably include an e-mail address.

3) The 500 goblin points you received from the Kickstarter are immediately spendable. If I understand the policy right, you can't buy back events you weren't a member for, but you can spend goblin points to get a monthly blanket and traditionally logistics has allowed players to spend for up to 3 months prior to the start of their membership. This would net you approximately a level and a half to two levels of build. Contact logistics (again e-mails can be found in above thread) to spend your goblin points and create your character. As for the magic item, what you received was magic item picks from the magic item pick list. I think you got one pick, which means you can spend the pick AND some goblin points to get a minor magic item. You can also save the magic item pick and earn more through other methods. If you do so you can potentially get a more powerful magic item in the future. The magic item picking rules are currently being discussed and may be changed shortly, so you might want to wait on using this pick (it will be useful whenever you spend it).

4) The event fee covers room and board for the weekend, including breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning and dinner Saturday night. Provided food comes from donations, so if there aren't enough donations for an event, an event may not include food. The food committee is very good at letting players know what food will be available each weekend and what meals are included. You are responsible for any other food you may need in game. Also, while HQ provides beds (with mattresses this year!!), there is a limit to the number of beds and there is no other bedding. Bring a sleeping bag, heavy blankets, etc. and it is always a good idea to bring a tent just in case a weekend oversells the bed space.

5) Nothing I can think of. If you think of anything, just ask. Also, bring LOTS of socks. Figure out how many you think you need, double that number and then double it again. That is roughly enough.

Hey John!

My name is Kyle I'm the new guy running customer service at HQ. Send me an email and I'll get you our "getting started" packet along with info on anything else you may need! Thanks for joining up!

All,

@ Mike -
Nice to meet ya Mike!

1) After re-reading the tutorial that was in the rulebook, I think Dagorhir weapons would pass overall (minus stabby in most cases). Ours are built to withstand a much greater amount of force than Alliance's. The biggest issue I can see is your weapons tend to be ultralights compared to ours. Send me a PM and we can discuss the details until I can get more clarifcation. Love to hear your input on the subject. Thanks for the advice on the foamsmithers and latex, was about what I thought.

2) Awesome. Thanks!

3) Couple things I didn't know there, again, thank you!

4) Hit the details I was mostly looking for, perfect!

5) I was in the Scouts. I always bring tons of socks. (Also we almost "always" camp in tents in Dagorhir, so I know the drill pretty well for camping)

@ Kyle -
Great! I'll send you an email now.

I'm not sure what you mean by "minus stabby", but it is important to note that thrusting tips are MANDATORY on all weapons except for latex weapons (I'm not the person to ask about rules regarding latex -- try David Tengdin). Latex weapons have a clause where they aren't, but also have a clause that you are never permitted to use them to stab with. That clause is never true for normal weapons. They must have a thrusting tip and must be safe to thrust with (even blunts... don't ask). You can't get a normal weapon "no-stab" safety checked.

If that isn't what you meant, then feel free to ignore all that.

Mike I think I got this.

Hello sir and welcome. I beleive the game you are coming from uses about the same guidelines for weapon construction as does Amtgard correct? I am played some Amtgard so I have some idea as to what that all means. For Alliance purposes (I am one of the weapons marshals hereabouts) I would say you are correct about the stabby-bits otherwise known hereabouts as the thrusting tip. Honestly I imagine all you would have to do is put 2" of soft cell foam (I recommend air conditioner strip or cushion foam from Jo-anns instead of seat cushion, not sure of the size of your weapon however) over the top. I would say any ratan cores will not be accepted, but if you like you can contact me at suerwythe@earthlink.net and I would be happy to discus weapons with you. Please not there is a posting on new weapons construction guidelines that came out last year on the general out of game boards (alliance as a whole, not this chapter) discussing lengths.

If you prefer to describe in some detail how your weapons are made I can try and give you some pointers, but we will not know till we get to the game.
