Note: A Lord Sentinel holds the authority of his leige

* Sworn Sergeants/Chiefs are military men and women who are chosen by nobles to serve as the Sergeant-at-arms for a particular lord, knight, baron, etc. This person is the right hand to the noble in all matters pertaining to the military matters, such as battle planning, defense of the noble’s estate, personal guard, etc. This position is considered to be a great honor, but it does not confer the full authority of the noble he/she serves. The Sworn Sergeant/Chief is not considered a noble him/herself. This is the primary distinction between them and a Lord Sentinel. However, a Sworn Sergeant/Chief is considered to have equal authority to a Sentinel.

** Lord Commanders are men and women who have been given noble titles as a result of their skills, accomplishments and service to the Crown. They are considered to be equal in rank to knights, sworn/lord seneschals and lord sentinels (unless the lord sentinel serves a noble of higher rank, in such a case, the lord sentinel, as an extension of his/her liege, is considered to have equal authority to his/her liege), but their authority is typically applied in matters relating to the military, specifically, defense of the Crown and the Realm. A commander who has not yet been made a noble is a military officer of greater rank than captain, who is typically in the process of being vetted for lordship. However, one can be vetted for lordship whilst still holding the rank of captain.

*** Lord Generals/Admirals are men and women who have been given noble titles as a result of their skills, accomplishments and service to the Crown. They are considered to be equal in rank to that of Barons, Counts and Ria who are within their land, but the Lord General/Admiral's authority is typically applied in matters relating to the military, specifically, defense of the Crown and the Realm.

**** The Legion of the Vigil is specialized unit of soldiers. Members of the Legion (broadly referred to as Legionnaires and/or Keepers of the Vigil) are tasked with missions requiring extensive combat training. The Legion is comprised of commoners and nobles. While nobles may join the Legion, their authority as a noble does not directly transfer within the Legion. For example, if a knight were to join the Legion he/she does not automatically assume command of the unit to which he/she belongs. While on Legion missions, the knight would defer to all Legionnaires of higher rank, and his/her rank within the Legion would be determined solely by his/her progression within the Legion. Likewise, a centurion within the Legion will defer to a noble at the rank of knight, or higher, on a field of battle. On the other hand, given that a kentarch is of equal rank to a knight, the kentarch would not necessarily defer to the knight on the field of battle. In such a case, the kentarch is first and foremost responsible for leading his/her unit of legionnaires, while the knight would tend to the overall welfare and leadership of the citizenry.
