Resist Destroy Magic "Choice" Usage

For reference, the text of the Resist Destroy Magic ritual is as follows:

The Resist Destroy Magic Ritual allows the bearer of the Ritual Target to expend this Ritual Effect to defend against the effects of a Destroy Magic Ritual by calling "Resist."

The wielder must make the choice immediately as to whether to expend the Resist Destroy Effect or not when the item is struck by a Destroy Magic. After expending the Ritual Effect, the tag with the Ritual Effect should be updated as soon as possible to reflect the fact that the Resist Effect has been expended.

"Resist" is typically a Smart Defensive that requires the target to make a conscious decision to use it.

Question 1: Does a character need to be in-game conscious/aware to use a Resist Destroy Magic charge? For example: I am struck with a Destroy Magic while I am under a Sleep effect. Can I use a Resist Destroy Magic? The ritual text specifies that the "wielder must make the choice immediately as to whether to expend the Resist Destroy Effect or not when the item is struck by a Destroy Magic", but "wielder" doesn't specify whether it is a Player Choice (out-of-game choice) or a Character Choice (in-game choice).

Question 2: Does a non-sentient target (such as a Circle of Power or an Item) automatically use a Resist Destroy Magic charge if targeted by a Destroy Magic and doesn't have a valid "wielder" to make the choice, since it isn't sentient and therefore cannot choose on its own? For example: My Circle of Power has a Resist Destroy Magic on it and is targeted by a Destroy Magic. Does it automatically use the Resist Destroy Magic, since it cannot "choose" whether or not to do so?

Question 3, depending on answers to previous: If Question 1 is True (must be in-game conscious to use Resist DM) and Question 2 is also True (non-sentient target will automatically choose to Resist), does an item carried by an unconscious character automatically use its Resist Destroy Magic when targeted by a Destroy Magic, since its wielder character is not able to make that choice for the non-sentient target? For example: I am under a Sleep effect and am struck with a Destroy Magic that targets my Sword, which has a Resist Destroy Magic on it. I am not conscious to make the choice, so does my Sword make the automatic choice as a non-sentient target to use its Resist Destroy Magic?

I was just thinking about this recently and figured I'd ask.
