Resurrections

I have heard many different views on this, so I will ask. At a gameday, a mod, or an event, how many Resurrections do you expect/plan for? This is both a question for players and people who staff in any game (not just here). I ask as I have gotten answers anywhere from ?The point is to press the players, and kill them when they make mistakes, but not when they do it right? To ?I like to have a few Resurrections every time to keep the players on their toes.? To even ? If the characters done do everything just right we should rezz them. Even if they do the right things, a few should be Resurrected anyway.?

Also, in an event (because we have larger numbers there) with 45 charicters, how many Resurrections would you expect to see? 0-2, 2-4, 4-8, 8+, as many as needed?

Okay...you asked, I reply.

Being a plot-guy from another game, I think that "just rezzing someone" for the sake of making someone rez is pure cheese.

My opinion is that planning ressurections shouldn't be done, as that's effectively targeting a player. That's not fair to the player, and if word gets out that it happened, it makes Plot look bad. That's definitely not a good thing.

Instead of planning a rez, plan for the contigency of it. IF it happens, great...a plan is in place..but don't *make* it happen.

Push the characters, but don't kill'em "just because" Not fair to them, makes plot look bad. Just my opinion.

Dependsa on the situation. The death spire event... HIGH rezz count. Perfectly logical. My last death, way cool and targetted. On average, I'd say 3-5 is a decent death rate for an event. Reminds the characters IG of their mortality and encourages brain usage.

Being as I'm quite often telling the stories, I think an event has gone well when all of the ressurections, no matter what, are good ones. This is one of the reasons though that I stick with this nonsense of the earth guild. I like seeing other people have fun, even at the worst moments for them in the game. And if I can take an active part in that, more power to me. :)

As I told one of the new players this weekend after the game. I have one hard/fast rule. Don't do stupid things and you will likely survive the game. I don't plan for rezzing people. I do think things should be challenging. I also think that sometimes the plot *should* overwhelm (but not destroy) the players *if* it fits the story to do so. They should also have a way out of such situations, or a plot member watching closely to make sure that the killing does not rez the game day.

In answer to your last question? I don't ever *expect* anyone to res, but I know that it will happen. Innevitably someone will get into a messed up situation and have no way out. Then they will res. In a weekend, I have seen several, and I have seen few. It all depends. I don't pin the success or failure of an event on how many people are rezzed by my plots, just whether or not they laughed/cried/screamed (ah, the screams of the innocent, right Bond?)/etc. And whether they are exhausted but very happy by the end of the weekend. It doesn't always happen, and I have yet to have someone not thank me for the cool death.

I don't think Plot should ever plan for a number of deaths to happen. Plot should just put out plot, and if the players make mistakes and take deaths... then they take deaths.. if they are wiley and keep themselves out of too much danger... then they survive. I generally think that players should be presented with a situation... and how they deal with it is their option... How the players deal with it is ultimately up to them. I prefer to not have to kill anyone... and I prefer to not die at events... I do think that characters should take a death every now and again so that they know it can happen... but I think it should be due to their own actions and not because plot forced it to happen.

I couldn't agree with you more. I've taken a death and it was in fact because I decided to walk back to camp alone.

One of the things that I really hate, and I saw this way back in the days of Twilight Vale, is plot congratulating NPCs on the number of rez's they caused and even worse, telling the NPCs to not come back to MC until they had collected at least 10 life tags. I think that our group got targeted a lot by plot (Not my death... that was totally my fault) because we had a high rate of sucess in our adventures... well and we were also a bunch of gypsies and their friends :) That kind of activity is just not acceptable to me and I would take action if I saw it happen in Seattle.

As for me on the other side of the LARP, I'll admit I don't like killing people, but it is part of the game and if they make a poor choice, then so be it. I won't have kobolds first aiding and such and if I think the PCs are being overwhelmed because they choose a bad tactic, then I'll let the chips fall where they may. However, I do not consider a bad tactic to be to anything but the way I would handle it. I think that things should have multiple possible solutions and that if the PCs think of something cool that I didn't think of, then so be it, they get away, save the day, get the magic item, whatever they are there to do. If I think that I have scaled something poorly, or failed to think of a particular consequence, than I may (and have, but not always) throw in something that I think is logical to balance the fight a little but thankfully that has been a rare occasion.

I would never have stated number of rez's in mind for an event, but I would be aware that some mods or events have a higher risk than others (as the afore mentioned Death Spire) and that is fine in my book. Some things are just dangerous!
