Ritual Manipulation: Choose Flaw

It is not entirely clear what conditions must be met for the flaw chosen to take effect. In general terms, if I have identified an item with, say Cloak Gift 1x day, Cloak Curse 1x day, and the flaw (on the Cloak Curse) "Take half damage from fire while taking double from stone", and I hand it off to Bob, I could, in theory, tell Bob only about the Cloak Gift, and he would be (presumably) forbidden from using the Cloak Curse. Similarly, if I choose not to make him aware of the flaw, does it take effect anyways? Finally, let's say Bob knows I have a Damage Aura. He's seen me use it, it's obvious I have it, and I've even mentioned it in passing. I get my weapon disarmed and he runs off with it. Steve chases him down and stone bolts him - should Bob be taking double?

This post is to inform you that your question is currently being discussed by the ARC and once some clarification has been made will be posted here. Depending on the level of clarification and discussion (and potential involvement of the Owners or other national staff, if needed) this may take time.

Flaws do not apply if a player does not know about them, however, any communication about the item's powers (such as Identification or handing an item off from one person to another) must include an OOG communication detailing the flaws.

For example: Bob picks up an unidentified item. He doesn't know the flaws or benefits yet. Later he goes and gets it Identified. At this time, he's given the tag and the flaw is told to him ("double damage from Flame"). He then sells it to Joe, telling Joe only about the benefits in-game ("look, this does a Purify 2x/day!"), but when he hands over the tag he also is required to tell Joe OOG about the flaw. Later, Joe tells his friend Sally that the item does a Purify 2x/day. Sally decides that she wants the item so she waylays Joe and takes the item. As Joe is handing it over, he tells Sally OOG that the item also has the flaw.

In the end, we rely on players to not abuse the system. As always, players caught abusing this part of the system will be called on it and sanctioned appropriately. The intent of this clarification is that players with knowledge of any powers of the item should also (even if only OOG) be informed of the flaws of the item.
