The first thing he probably wants to do when buying armor is set a budget. You can get a helmet and cuirass anywhere from a couple hundred to thousands. What is he using it for? If it's just for costuming purposes, he can likely get away with less expensive. If he wants to wear it all day and often, he'll probablyl want to spend more. Generally, the more you spend the more protective the armor will be and the more comfortable.
There are also some places that will sell a helmet for $300 and you can find the same one for $100 somewhere else. This is mostly stuff from India, which looks nice and is fairly functional. High price does not always indicate quality. The better educated one is, the better they will do.
