Rules Clarification and Marshal/Cabin notes for October 2017

Cedric

Rogue
Marshal
So at the end of the last event, we had a lot of rules questions come in through our player feedback survey. I wanted to address these en-mass.

General Marshal Ward/Marshal Notes

All rooms need marshal notes and a W for either a wizard lock or ward. There are things this event that will obey wards and it needs to be clearly marked. OOG areas must be listed on the marshal notes.

Can I sleep OOG?

Yes, absolutely. But you need to leave your character card where you are sleeping. Best thing is to note this on your marshal notes and tell your fellow players so that marshals don't need to wake you up to find your character card. Many people need to sleep through the night and don't want to be woken up. Help us help you.

Please clearly mark yourself as IG or OOG even when inside your cabin living room or when going to the bathroom.

While the bathrooms themselves are OOG, please wear a white headband when going to the bathroom or have a hand/weapon over your head if you are OOG going to and from the bathroom. If not marked, you will be presumed IG unless otherwise noted.

When Defensives can/need to be called. 2 seconds? 5 seconds? Can you call Defensives out of order?

All Spell Defenses must be called correctly (for example “Reflect Magic” or “Magic Armor”) to be effective and must be called within two seconds. (ARB. p.100)

Waylay - I keep hearing that Denver is "looser" about waylay, but an official clarification would be helpful so that if PCs are waylaid we are working by the same standards that NPCs do.

If the target knows that the attacker is coming and announces it by saying “I know you’re back there,” or otherwise showing that he or she is/was aware of the waylayer’s intentions, then the Waylay does not work. The victim will of course still take normal damage from the blow. Walking around all day randomly saying “I know you’re back there” will not stop a Waylay. Waylay can be used in combat if the target is caught by surprise, such as being unaware that the waylayer was involved in the combat.

A victim who is unconscious, willing, or under a Web, Confine, or Paralysis effect is automatically surprised for purposes of this skill. It is also possible to Waylay a target the waylayer is talking to if the victim looks away or if the attacker gets behind the target. A person who is successfully waylaid will not know who the attacker was (it is, after all, a surprise attack). They cannot later identify him or her as the attacker, although the victim may have suspicions if they were just talking to someone before being knocked unconscious (ARB p.69)

Endow Carry - clarify that you can call it and run and don’t need to wait for the three count.

This spell can also be used to perform certain limited role-playing tasks such as quickly dragging an unconscious or debilitated creature for five seconds without having to literally perform the task out-of-game. You must state “Endow” when doing these actions. E.g. Baron Darius sees Kendrick in front of him get hit by a death spell. As Kendrick is falling to the ground, Darius can touch him, say “Endow, I carry you” and can immediately move Kendrick without the three count of picking him up. (ARB p.117)

Certain effects like Endow and Strength allow a player to physrep things that are normally impossible to do, like grab another person (regardless of comparative weights) and run for a short time. To facilitate this, and in the spirit of “Be all you can’t be,” this means that
the player with the Endow or Strength must only indicate to the other player that they are being picked up and transported. They do not need to specifically wait for the person to clamber to their feet and follow along (though clearly the person being transported should make their best effort to get to where they should be as soon as possible). (ARB PG 87)

Clarification Roguing/wards and marshal notes.

Can you hold two longswords but use only one. “Include a possible verbal ‘This sword will take damage’ or the like.”

If you do not have the skill to use a weapon you are carrying, or if you are presently unable to use a weapon in which you are skilled, you must either immediately drop the weapon or take any damage that hits your weapon. (ARB p.93)

Weapon attacks must be done in a specific way. If you are holding a weapon in a way that is not allowed by the skill, you will take the damage. (ARB p.94)

If you are holding two longswords, one in each hand, you would take damage if it hit either sword and you are unable to call damage with either sword while you are holding the second weapon.

Yes! We had an on-the-spot ruling that I wanted to get official clarification for. Radius effects [specifically by my voice] with walls/windows/doors that might be open. We were told in this case, BMV would not pass an open door or window. This seems to contrast with traps, which require a solid barrier. Please clarify! :)

-Ties in with the clarification below.

LCO rules - BMV

Radius deliveries include traps, contact poisons, and monster abilities such as eye contact or sound of voice. Usually a Hold is called when a radius attack takes place and everyone partially within the radius is affected. Radius attacks can never be Dodged or Evaded(ARB p.97)

By my voice effects are a voice delivered radius effect. If one hears the call “By My voice, arcane disease”, then you are affected by it. Since it is an approximation of a radius of magical energy, blocking your ears is not a valid in-game tactic to avoid the effect, and would be considered cheating.

By My Voice will always pass through walls/windows/doors unless the marshal specifies otherwise. By My Voice will never pass through Wards/Circles of Power unless the marshal specifies otherwise.

LCO rules - Swarm By

Swarmed by <number>: <ability>. Any card with this ability allows an NPC to use the named ability without limit when they are actively engaged (meaning approximately 10 foot range unless otherwise defined locally) by <number> or more foes. For example, "Swarmed by 4: Spellstrike Death" would allow the NPC to swing for "Spellstrike Death" with their weapons so long as 4 or more enemies are within approximately 10 feet. The named ability may alternately be called by OOG Marshals in the fight.

Note that when this ability is used, only the bonus effect needs to be called – “Swarmed by <number>” is just the name of the ability, it does not need to be announced.

Can you put two alchemy effects into one container?

This was a touchy ruling for us, but for now we are going with the following ruling in Denver.

As soon as the two alchemy effects are mixed into one container, that container would be treated as a food object, and the alchemy would only be active for the next 10 minutes. This means that only players with one level in Alchemy could put two elixirs into one container.
