Safety: Culture of Being Classy

I want to talk to everyone for a moment about our boffer fighting culture here in Alliance Denver.

Porch built the fire of Sunday fighter practices that became tradition, and brought scores of players into our hobby. That weekly date gave so many players the gleam of joyful murder in their eyes as they go dashing across green fields to get them some in the enemy lines! The Amtgarders came in and showed even the best of us that we’re but babes in the woods, ignorant even of dark side of the moon shield fighting techniques. The most intrepid went out to something that Paxton helped build for Amtgard, Sword Knight Boot Camp, and they came back as elite Navy Seals of boffer fighting. They have shared the ways of their people with our people, and we’re all the better for it….

We have a super high class, high quality fighting culture here, and we all like it that way, thankyouverymuch.

What I want to discuss now is our attitude about fighting:

We encourage everybody, of all levels of skill and experience, to get out there and try = Check!
We have tons of great fighters who genuinely love mentoring = Check!
We offer lots of resources on making or own weapons, or where to buy them = Check!
Jesse gives us great advice about saying “Please” and being nice on the field = Check!

And…

What I’d like to ask now is for your help in shaping our culture about how we respond to the on-field remark, “Please check your swings,” or, “Please try not to hit so hard,” or, “Please watch the charging.”

I want us to have the sort of culture in which the only possible response to that is:

“I’m sorry. I’ll take a minute to chill. Thank you.”

Please don’t argue.
Please don’t criticize the other person.
Please don’t say that they started it first.
Please don’t talk about them behind their back later.
Please don’t slash their tires in the parking lot.

Please help make our culture one in which every person in this chapter is the class act that just takes that on ourselves, apologizes like a gentleperson, and then takes the important step: Actually take just a minute to chill out, even if you don’t think you need it. Probably especially if you don’t think you need it. We’re nice people, and we support our fellow gamers, and if someone says you need it – Hey, maybe you need it. Happens to the best of us.

I’d like to ask for some Amens on this proposal for adopting this consciously into our culture – especially if you’re a hard core stick jock whose weapons are made of materials found only in the space program, or who sleeps with a death blossom of spell packets in your hand even in your Warded cabin, “just in case.” You’re the heart of our battlefield culture in this game. You’re the one others look up to. You’re the one who takes n00bs under your wing and turns them into the freakin’ Borg, unable to be defeated in the same way twice!

Thanks,
