I know I talked to a number of you this previous Marketday, and I'd like to both remind you of my offer as well as share it with those I did not perhaps get a chance to discuss it with. For those who have spent much time in Wayside, you likely already know that I have finished construction on a small keep, built upon an old trading road on the slopes of the mountains within Buckland. At this point I have a fair number of people residing there as we have recently finished construction, the laborers and support staff have done an excellent job, and while a fair number will undoubtedly return home, many others would stay should the economics of the area support them.
To that end I am seeking those who would care to help, it is a rare pleasure to get to ask for help with a task that doesn't involve the risk of life and limb, but don't think these tasks are any less important, in fact they are often more important as building a livelyhood for the people is the only way we can truely establish a lasting peace.
Here are the important details of my offer, if you are interested please contact me so we can discuss specific arraignments
1.) The area of my keep is within the Lands of Buckland, any endeavors will be taxed according to the laws here, if you need information onto the differences in his Grace's land and Wayside I will be happy to discuss them with you. Taxes will be handled by my Seneschals and should not needlessly prevent your ability to turn a profit.
2.) Slavery is legal in Buckland, but is no longer legal within my lands/keep as I hold it under the King's pleasure until the trial of Buchaneon is completed. However we have a reasonable number of former slaves yet that are still in need of work and training. Wages are comparatively low because food and board is provided by myself and will not need to be paid by you.
3.) My goal is establish and build a community that sustains itself, many businesses require money to begin and I understand this. So for those in need of assistance I am willing to offer matching loans equal to whatever you invest yourself. The loans will have no interest, however they will exist as a lein against said business, and any business with such a loan outstanding will agree to contribute 10% of their profits to the upkeep of the land (in addition to regular taxes, but calculated only on the profit after such fees are paid to his Grace)
4.) All workers must be paid as to their ability, those hiring workers without existing skills must either provide training, or an alotment of time for training provided by the members of my keep when requested.
5.) Finally for those wishing to work, or ply their trade without investing, we have many positions that pay well depending on your ability and dedication to the work. This work will of course result in more hard coin in your pocket during marketdays, which is something I think many might desire.
I know many of you might be unsure of what needs you could fill, so here is a short list of things I think could do well in these lands.
1.) Production of goods - An obvious one but a good place to start, if you have a production skill, such as alchemy, potionmaking etc. Establishing a workshop, or series of such and training in apprentices to help you craft things for sale is generally an effective plan. In addition seamstresses, cobblers, bakers, and a hundred other small crafts could all find work here, although I encourage you to hire and train at least some help to watch your business while you are away.
2.) Training - I would like to be able to offer escort services to traders bringing goods through the trails. While direct help with this would be useful, those able and willing to train others in such skills would be an excellent addition. Most of the likely problems are some of the creatures in the area can be quite aggresive, although not generally dangerous enough to need adventure attention.
3.) Hospitality - A building already exists to house traders, but it would be good to have a few dedicated business people to serve their needs. A small tavern, a stables/horse care group, and perhaps a messanger service would all be helpful options.
4.) Other - I cannot think of everything, but with the keep, and the town near-by, almost all jobs and business would be welcomed.
As always I am happy to welcome visitors to my keep for those who would like to come by and see things first hand before deciding to invest their money or time here, or just to visit. A pidgeon to my seneschal in advance of your visit will help us ensure we have comfortable lodging available for you.
-Regards,
Enan Bluewater.
