Shatter vs Magic Items

¿Does a successful Shatter against a Magic Item deactivate passive effects (e.g. Armored Shell, Race Reaver, Sturdy Armor) or just remove the ability to activate effects with charges (e.g. Raging Strike, Memory Strike, Heroic Interception) untill Mended?

Shatter, beyond checking to see if Rituals are present on an item, doesn't, technically, interact with the rituals on an item at all.

The rituals are still there, and still function, theoretically, but may be unable to be used, based on what you need to do to use them.

From your list above:
  • Armored Shell would be unaffected, as nothing about the functionality of the armor, as armor, makes that ritual work.
  • Race Reaver, would still function, but since the ritual modifies attacks made with that weapon, it doesn't matter if the weapon can swing for Body, since it can't be used to swing while Broken.
  • Sturdy Armor would still reduce the refit timer of the armor, but the armor can't be refit (or provide armor points) until it has been mended.
  • A Broken weapon (even one with Raging Strike) can't be used to make a weapon attack, so the ability to add the Strike keyword to the attack is largely moot.
  • Memory Strike, as above, relies upon making an attack with the weapon, which it can't do while Broken.
  • Heroic Interception would still work because intercept does not require the use of a weapon.

Alright, it's not about active/passive effects but about whether the tool for administering the effect is still viable. So, Spell Store on a Broken club can still be used, but the Assassin's Edge can't be because the club isn't functional as a weapon. Huh. I think I like that - it seems a clever way to deal with the Shatter/MI interface

Right. Shatter is basically an off switch for the “Game Itemness” of the targeted item.

Abilities, rituals, etc., that rely on the functioning of the item would effectively be unusable (with that item) while the item is Broken.

Things that don’t rely on the item to work, would continue to work.

i just thought of a question.. if the item was strenghened (blacksmith form) before the magic was placed upon it, would that help against shatter/destroy magic??

All Strengthen charges are consumed when an item is successfully hit with a Shatter, but you can "Resist" the Shatter effect.

Destroy Ritual Magic is a different effect entirely and doesn't interact with the Strengthen mechanic. If DRM resolves, the item is no longer magical, but the Strengthens remain.

For avoiding shatter effects, there are a couple options:

1. Strengthening - a Strengthened item will resist a Shatter, but all strengthen charges on the item will be consumed.

2. Render - the Render ritual gives an item a single Resist Shatter per LP.

Destroy Magic is an entirely different effect that is only avoidable by either a Resist Destroy Magic ritual or the target not being magical in the first place. This effect only removes Ritual effects from a target and doesn’t really interact with Strengthening at all.
