So I have two new people probably joining Southern MN

Icey

Specialist
Didn't want to just bring them along and startle Logistics and then have them get mad at me for not having them go through the proper procedure :P

So what do I need to do for proper procedure?

The first step is telling us whether they will be PCing or NPCing.

Both will most likely be PC'ing.

Well, help them build them some characters with their startup Build Points, then send the logistics address a pre-reg email with that information.

A'ight. Then after that? Get the whole procedure out of the way so I don't go down like 50 posts just asking, "And then?" "And then?" "And then?" and looking totally stupid doing it ><

Once you send in your pre-reg, that's pretty much it. I don't really know what else to explain.

Oh... okay.

I think it would also be a good idea to take them out in the yard and beat them with swords till they have an idea about combat.

When I first started I attacked the box elder trees in my back yard, its not the same having something that can dodge.

A'ight. Sounds like a lot of fun >:D

as long as they have weapons, costume, characters, and armor, then it just comes to practicing play so they know what they're doing.

but that last thing is optional because there are plenty of people around to help anyone out. when my buddy started out, we just chilled and made some weapons first and fought a bit before making any real decisions

which, btw, if you need any spare weapon reps let me know. I have an arsenal at my disposal and as a new player marshal i would like to make sure everyone is armed to the specifications of their characters

Nah, I have Jesse Blouin to do the making of stuff. You've seen his post where he's all talking about himself, first in the first person, and then immediately after in the third person.

I've already started working on the one person's character, and if I don't hear back from my other friend, I might end up just having him NPC.

We really need some more NPCs, you know, and would be probably be quite grateful if either of them chose to do it.

NPCing may be a better bet, so they have more build walking in, plus a monthly blanket or two...

15 build isn't much.

Alright, they can NPC. I'll tell them if they have a problem with, it, too bad. Then I'll proceed to smack them over the head w/ my dagger.

Never discourage people from playing their first event. If a chapter still running a build cap can't scale to let newbies get some fun, we have more teouble than even I had thought.

Well, I think the biggest factor is we're pretty much immediately sieging the castle, which is going to be a huge event in and of itself, meaning they're going to get thrown straight into difficult combat without having much of a clue of what's going on, and most likely end up dying and having to resurrect. At that point you usually go to the Earth Circle and wait to be resurrected while you're missing out on all the fun, versus being an NPC and usually keep coming back over and over, and always being in the action.

At the same time, you will never recapture the immersion level of going into a big fight like that knowing you are the smallest fish in the pond. Fear is a good thing. It's why I am a serial retiree. :)

Let your friends choose what they want to do based on what will be the most fun for them. Yes, the castle siege will be a challenge, but keep in mind that smart tactics and utilizing stronger allies will help any lower level character. Also, I'd rather work with NPCs who freely chose to do that rather than NPCs forced to do it.

Make sure you give any new player a decent weapon skill. Your first event you only have enough build to stab things, mostly.

I agree with Wraith and Orc, its their first event and is free. Whats more, even if they die their first event is a mulligan pretty much. They shouldn't worry to much about the details and just come and relax and see whats up. The first event is always a learning experience so ether way they will walk away confused but exited to come back and do it again (we hope).

I'm not a marshal but ya...

The biggest step is to arrive as early as you can. Being new they need to fill out some paper work and if they are PCing, they need to make a character. Whats more, having the chance to do some newby training is never a bad idea. Try and have some extra weapons for them if you can and remind them of the "dress code" and that they should pack and dress according to the temperature. If your close enough friends, it may even be a good idea to help them back as I know on my first couple events I well over packed. If they want to do archery, they WILL need their own bows/crossbows as Monster Camp is short on those as it is and needs more. Send a message to Adam (dragonfire8974) if you need some weapons. He usually has some extras that he can borrow out. Tell them about how light spells and effects work and have them plan accordingly. Try and get them set up with some form of armor if you can. The first game is always hard, and not having armor makes it that much harder. The rest is fairly standard like waring boots if they have them and such.

Sorry for the longwindedness of this.

Last thing, we are going to try and set up a fight practice for new players so keep your eyes open for that.
