SoMN LCO Effects for 2014

Hey folks,

Please try to familiarize yourself with the following effects, each of which you may encounter this season in the Southern Minnesota chapter. We do clarify these at each game, but the more people know them, the less time we need to take pre-game to do so. I threw some examples in there, to help clarify. If you have any questions about the following effects, feel free to post them here, and our staff will answer them for you.

Return

Return is a defensive that you may hear NPCs call when hit by a martial skill, spell, etc. The spell/skill is effectively treated as if it had been Cloaked (so that the target does not take the effect), but then the skill is returned to the user's card and can be used after 5 minutes (see Example 1). If a creature Returns a spell or other effect that a person has multiple uses of, other uses of that effect can be used before the 5 minutes until the original charge can be used is up (see Example 2). Any effects used from a production item (such as a battle magic scroll, alchemical gas, etc.) that are Returned are simply expended and cannot be used again (see Example 3). This also applies to Magic Item charges, which are not returned (see Example 3).

Example 1: Talitha runs behind a tough monster and calls "Terminate!" The monster calls "Return," not taking her Terminate, but Talitha can use her Terminate again after 5 minutes.
Example 2: Asher casts a Shatter at a creature that calls "Return", so he must wait 5 minutes to re-use that Shatter spell. However, if Asher had more than one Shatter remaining in memory, he could continue to cast the other Shatter spell slots.
Example 3: Lilly casts a Flame Bolt from a scroll at a monster, Gabriel chucks a Paralysis Gas at the same monster, and Briar activates an Elemental Ice Burst from a magic item and throws it at the same monster. The monster calls "Return, Return, Return," and since Lilly, Gabriel, and Briar used production/magic items, none of the effects are renewed to them in 5 minutes.

Amplified Reflect

Amplified Reflect is a combination of defensive/offensive that you may hear NPCs call when hit by a spell. The spell is effectively treated as if it had been Cloaked (so that the target does not take the effect), but you can discernibly in-game see the creature begin to "twist" the magic into something new that it can then throw. When used, a creature will call "Amplified Reflect, Magic <Effect>" before throwing a spell packet with the aforementioned effect. The effect that is thrown by the creature may not be the same as the spell you hit it with, and despite the word "reflect" in the title, this new spell effect does not automatically hit the original user like a Reflect Magic would; the creature using the Amplified Reflect must throw a new packet with this effect, which may or may not hit the original thrower (see Example 4).

Example 4: Dure'dhel hits a creature with a Dragon's Breath spell, which calls "Amplified Reflect, Magic Web!" and throws a packet at York, who is standing nearby.

Crushing

Crushing is a weapon carrier that you may encounter creatures swinging that represents a blow so strong that it is unable be blocked. If a creature swinging with the Crushing carrier hits any part of you or anything you are carrying (including weapons or shield), you will take the damage (see Example 5). Magic Armor with negate a blow of Crushing damage, and Crushing damage does not penetrate the defenses of a Prison spell, Wall of Force, Wizard Lock, Ward, Circle of Power, etc. Just as with any other weapon carrier, Crushing can be used in conjunction with Prepare to Die skills (see Example 6).

Example 5: Thorgrim decides to face a huge creature that swings for "5 Crushing", and the creature swings at him three times: The first blow hits Thorgrim's shield, the second hits his axe, and the third hits his shoulder. Since the creature has a Crushing carrier, Thorgrim's shield and axe are not capable of blocking the weapon damage from the first two hits, so Thorgrim takes 15 damage total from the three hits.
Example 6: Tazoulti steps in against the huge creature after Thorgrim steps back to retreat, and the creature calls "Prepare to Die, Crushing Stun Right Arm" and hits Tazoulti's shield. Since the Stun Limb was with the Crushing carrier, Tazoulti's shield was insufficient to block the blow, and now his right armed is stunned for 10 minutes, as per the Stun Limb effect.

For clarification, does the crushing blow go straight to body or does armor still count against it?

Armor still applies against Crushing.

How do Parry and Riposte interact with Crushing?

Parry will protect your target from damage but you will take it, Riposte will both riposte the damage as normal as well as having the riposter take the effect/damage

For clarification,

A call of 5 Crushing from a creature followed by a Riposte from an Adventurer would result in 5 Crushing damage to the Adventurer and 5 Normal damage to the creature?

Also, a Parry is essentially ineffective against a Crushing blow unless the Parry instigator is using it to protect someone other than him/her/it self, correct?

Yes, you both the Adventurer and Evil Monster would take the 5 Crushing damage and yes, a Parry used against a Crushing attack will not be effective unless you are trying to use it to defend another Adventurer.
