The LARPies

based on reports it went down in flames... It was summed up to me as a starting 2 hours late and a big NERO International Commerical. Some of the best review quotes so far:

"Want to make the LARPy awards better? Don't do it again."

"The Larpies didnt just leave a bad taste in mouths...it left a stench that lingers for days like being drenched in brute or old spice mixed with sweat and a baby's diaper."

"Anyone buying the DVD they make of this event? (wonder if they will add the benny hill music to it)".

It's a shame... I think the idea of a LARP award is cool, but not in Hollywood. It should be at a major gaming convention. The Phillip K. **** award is hosted at NorWesCon. The Spectrum award is hosted at Gaylaxicon. I mean, host it where your target audience is going to be! *sigh* Oh well.

I think that it was cool that they tried to do something. Personally, when I heard about it I didn't think that it sounded commercially viable and I don't think such an award show would be for some time to come if ever. But I still think they deserver kudos for trying.

Having not attended, I could not offer an educated opinion on what did, and did not, occur. It was interesting to read what Ford Ivey's opinion on the matter was.

Matt Pearson mentioned that outside of the LARP community itself, the show seemed to be a big hit. I did some digging around and found at least one article.

If the idea is to get LARPing in general into the eyes and minds of mainstream pop-hobbies, it would seem that this is a success. I'll do some more searching for reviews outside of NERO Alliance players to try and get a broader view.

The majority of the people I've spoken w/ or read were not Alliance folks. I think that a bunch of people who are just out for the money of it are not going to get it across. *shrug* Since some of the celebrity attendees were mocking the LARPers, I'm not sure quite how big a success it was. Personally I'd like to see more non-NERO reviews, positive or otherwise.

I'm not certain that mockery is a sign of anything, really. Having attended assorted cons, the celebs that pop up often mock and kid about the fanboys.

Agreed.

There is a reason con runners hate having, say Harlan Ellison*, as a guest. I think the idea of making it more known as a hobby w/o making it look like joke would have been better served if the guests had an interest in/knew what LARPing was. From what I can discern a lot of the people where there just to look a big boobs in very little and while I'm certain that is fun for a lot of people, I'm not certain that's how I want to promote LARPing. But then maybe having the trashy corset girls of NERO would be a good idea? I'm certain there are people who would enjoy that. And for the record I'd be just as opposed to the trashy shirtless guys of NERO.

*He is notorious for beng a difficult guest. I am here to tell you it is more than a rumor.
