To NPC or Not To NPC

Hello All,

I am finally going to get off my duff and LARP. I have been reading up on some different ones and really like the things I hear about Alliance. Plus, I live in NH where there is a group already. I also went ahead and bought the NERO rule book a year or so ago.

My question is, should I consider being an NPC for my first couple of events? I have no supplies at all. I am willing to make/craft whatever I need, but I thought NPCing would be a good way to get all the rules down.

Thanks in advance.

That's exactly the right attitude to have coming into our game. NPCing will give you a feel for the rules themselves, let you try out several different fighting styles and classes to see what suits you best, AND you gain XP at the same rate as someone who PC'd that same event, so when you do come in and PC you will start at a higher level and have a few extra skills.

Welcome, and hope you enjoy it!

From someone who plays in New Hampshire, although I've never actually done it, NPCing is really fun there and you'll get a run-down on the rules when you show up.

Can't wait to see you in Deadlands!

As someone who started NPCing long before I ever PC'd, I think it's a great advantage. It gives you a better idea of how the game works off paper, good character ideas, and also gives you a good idea of the flavor of the chapter you'll be playing at. It's also extremely fun and addictive -- and I know New Hampshire would love to have you. :) There are good folks there and awesome players.

And what he means by this is that NH is awesome and gives all their NPC's four columns that they can Spellstrike added to any card. :D

I wish! ...But then again I sometimes play a revenant cerebral devourer shadow mage, who am I to complain? ;)

As someone who started as an NPC, I can tell you it's a great way to whet your LARPing appetite. You'll learn the game and its rules, the IG history of the chapter and you'll get to know some of the other players and the staff. If you decide to PC after a few events you'll have a firm knowledge of the game; if you decide to stay an NPC you'll get progressively more complex stats and recurring roles. And love! We love longtime NPCs!

You'll have an excellent time with us at Deadlands -- especially if you like zombies.

Don't get the new guy confused Dave!

lol yea yea I know Michelle... ;) (skeemodog I was joking its not really quite like that...)

Anyways most of these folks are right. Unless you already feel like you really know what you want/are doing definately NPC first. Although from personal expieriance PC'ing new chapters for the first time ever is a huge blast too...

Done it a couple times... or 5... :)

I encourage the opposite--start out PC'ing! There is nothing so terrifying as running away as the weekend baddy and his 20 friends chase you to the tavern, or wherever everyone else is. Sure you only have a couple skills, but it forces you to use your brain as your #1 weapon against anything.

I still remember running around my first weekend. I stupidly decided to walk down to the tavern by myself to get a bite to eat (I encourage stupid stuff like this for your first time playing). As I was walking out of the tavern with a snack, I ran into a troll. I had food, two daggers, waylay, and pants that were about to be urinated in. As he came running at me, I begged him not to attack. I offered him the food in exchange for my life. He took it and started to chow down. I feigned running away, turned back around, and waylayed him. I felt awesome.

Then I got to the top of the hill and the five other trolls rolled me. Luckily I was close to people who took care of them and got me healed up. ;)

lol that's an awesome story! I do have to admit I spent a large part of my first event at new chapters running around in the dark desperately trying to stay alive. They can't kill you if they can't catch you... ;)
