Two New Players, coming your way.

Howdy folks,

I'm looking at attending the event next weekend. A close friend and I recently talked about getting into LARP together, and I wanted to check out this venue beforehand.

A little about myself:
I've larped before, my last game was a SOLAR campaign in Northern Florida/Mississippi/Georgia (Cerroneth) with a brief stint in Clanthia, both of which are spinoffs of NERO, much like this venue appears to be. I played a human rogue, and a plot-monkey Phase-Spider Wylder. I'm a navy dude, originally from Bonney Lake, WA.

My friend and I are planning on tying a couple Human Rogue characters together with a neat little backstory and storming your beaches, so to speak. I'm curious what the major differences between this setting and SOLAR are (aside from the more than doubled number of classes, and the different racial lore.) and what the best way to get prepared for a solo venture next weekend and a twosome come May-abouts.

Questions to answer:

-Is there an official character sheet I can start filling out? If it's not too different than SOLAR I should be able to figure it out pretty quickly.
-Is there a guide to creating new characters?
-Where is the HUMAN lore? I wasn't able to find it in the rulebook.
-What sorts of guilds/baronies are currently active and, possibly, recruiting a couple handsome young human rogues?
-Does anyone have any interest in possible tying into our joint backstory? We're at square one here.
-Are barbarians human? Or is it literally a different race entirely?
-Where can I find a concise guide to legal boffer construction for this venue?
-and, finally, is there going to be enough parking for my giant-*** truck, and should I bring a tent?

Hope to hear back soon! Feel free to fill me in on anything else you might think to be pertinent! Thanks!

Keegan,

Welcome to Alliance! :) I'm Barbara, part of the fantastic logistics staff here at Alliance Seattle. You can get a hold of us at logistics@alliance-seattle.com to help get started with your character creation. I'd also encourage you to talk to our new player reps, who you can reach through newplayer@alliance-seattle.com.

To answer some of your questions:
-Is there an official character sheet I can start filling out? If it's not too different than SOLAR I should be able to figure it out pretty quickly.
There's no official sheet, you just contact us at logistics and they fill out the sheet with your stuff. :)

-Where is the HUMAN lore? I wasn't able to find it in the rulebook.
Yeah, unless someone has been hiding it REALLY well, there isn't any Human lore. Basically humans are just that: human. Normal folks. :) They come in all shapes, sizes and ways of life.

-Is there a guide to creating new characters?
There are several guides that we've been working on, most of which are easiest to access by talking to either logistics or the new player guides.

-What sorts of guilds/baronies are currently active and, possibly, recruiting a couple handsome young human rogues?
FOIG! ;D There are all sorts of guilds and organizations running in game, and it's great character development to ask around in game. :)

-Are barbarians human? Or is it literally a different race entirely?
They are their own race entirely, just like gypsies. Barbarians do have more background available, as do races other than humans. The national race packets are available here: http://alliancelarp.com/forum/threads/n ... ets.16480/ and are filled with information pertinent to each race (except humans). It's encouraged that you keep in mind that your character should probably only be familiar with the contents of his own race packet, so keep that in mind if you want to start reading. There are things in those packets that most people wouldn't know about the other races.

-Where can I find a concise guide to legal boffer construction for this venue?
Boffer construction guidelines are in the rulebook on page 81. :)

-and, finally, is there going to be enough parking for my giant-*** truck, and should I bring a tent?
There should be plenty of parking. We have fit nearly 100 people on site before, so provided you aren't driving a semi, we should be okay. As for the tent, we've got multiple cabins that are heated and have light, so unless you particularly like tent camping in the woods in January in the PNW, I'd say just bring a sleeping bag and a pillow. There are also showers and bathrooms. It's actually a pretty nice place.

I hope that helps! Welcome again, and I'll be happy to help with your emails soon!

Barbara

Thanks for the answers, and the quick response to my character email. I preregistered, I'm waiting to hear back about my backstory, and I've just got a couple more questions:

- What's the current state of things? I guess this venue is deep in a story arc? How will that impact/affect a new adventurer coming in?

- Where the heck can I get gaffers tape on short notice? I've scoured the internet and my local stores (i'm on whidbey island) and it's like nobody has ever heard of it, and the websites selling it seem to believe in charging twice the cost of the item for 10 day delivery... I hate working with duct tape.

Gaffers is usually known as cloth tape (by those that don't know what Gaffers tape is). You can get the 1" wide sport grip tape at most sporting good stores, many music stores (guitar/bass/etc) carry it in the wider 2" type.

Another option is to use duct, then put a stocking over it.

We're only about 2 games away from finishing the current story arc. Then the plot team will be changing. How will that impact/affect new adventurers? On an oog level it'll mostly affect you based on your characters level.

I NPCed in oregon before PCing in seattle near the end of a plot arc, and we ended up fighting a dragon. I was at level 6. That meant there was little I had on my card that could go up against the burly dragon or it's soldiers. Instead I mostly fought the minions of undead it kept spawning. Lair cards will still be scaled to you and your part's adventuring level. You'll probably want to go on lots of those.

Both of the local Alliance games (Seattle and Oregon) are wrapping up several year-long campaigns. Over the next few games both chapters will have new campaigns beginning, which is a very good time to start playing since you'll be getting started with new plotlines in the very near future. The advantage to coming in at the end of the previous campaigns lies in getting involved, learning the people (IG and OOG), learning the rules, and using those connections and knowledge to start in a good position in the next campaign.

Because Seattle is quickly approaching the end of the campaign, there is a lot of knowledge about the world and a lot of information and ideas being shared pretty freely. I'm sure that there will be In Game announcements, information-sharing meetings, and the like that can be easily attended or eavesdropped upon by newer folk so that they can learn quickly what is happening around them. The last two games will be pretty intense with roleplay and combat. Just because there is a lot of combat with powerful bad guys doesn't mean low-level characters can't participate: many creatures in large fights are intended to be fought by low, mid, or high-level characters so that everyone can engage. Watch what is going on around you and ask people a lot of questions and you're almost certain to figure out where you'll have the most fun fighting. As always, remember that Alliance is a group game, so interacting with other players and fighting as a team will be key to having a good time at game.

There is a sheet online you can fill out to help build your character. Instructions at viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7482
