Use of tacks

you may not use thumb tacks on the interior of your cabins at Millersylvania. We incurred a $50 minimum charge (the full bill will be given to us later) due to two cabins violating this. The ranger said there were others, but there were two which were bad enough to need repairing.

I know you like hanging tapestries, etc. in the cabins to divide rooms and wall off bunks, but please no longer us tacks to do so.

Thank you!
Dave

What do you suggest we use in their place? I have been told in the past we were not allowed to use duct tape because it can leave a sticky residue. Are we no longer supposed to hang decorations? If so, that is very sad.

In the cabins that have rafters string could probably be used in creative ways, but I thought it said on the postings inside the cabins that tacks were usable. Am I wrong about that?

I last recall a conversation during opening ceremonies in which I asked for clarification that the rangers preferred us splitting wood with tacks over gumming it up with glue from duct tape. It seems odd that they would mention it now...

Sounds like another site might be more desirable.

Ouch - I know we do a lot of tacks to hang tapestries in our cabin. That's pretty much the only way to do it.

I know in the past we've specifically asked about tacks and it's been OK. Did you ask when/why this policy has changed?

The use of tacks as well as permision to move bunks was revoced due to a couple other LARP groups that have been using the site. There was major damage done to several of the buildings (food on the walls, nails, hundreds of tacks used.). The rangers are restricting everyone that comes through for the time being. They know we didnt do it, but its the old one person ruining it for everyone deal.

As to alternative ideas for wall hangings is to use thread loops, or perhaps take metal hangers and bend them to loop over the roof beams. You could fold the hangings over the beams, of course that would require much larger hangings. Its not optimal, but there are several ways to do things if you plan ahead for the rules at Miller.

Except that there are several cabins that don't have roof beams.

I agree that the situation is no good, but short of never going back there I was just trying to think of things to help.

Dave: just a note, you may want to point out to them that they're notices just to the side of the door say tacks are ok. In fact it says no tape, no nails, only tacks. I am not saying this should allow us to use them in the future, but maybe you can point that out to avoid any fee from them.

Also, what about tacks outside? This is important in regards to Ward signs.

It wasn't a flat out "No tacks" policy, it was an 'excessive tack use' in two buildings. Basically, we were allowed to use tacks, up until the ranger actually saw a few cabins fully decked out and realized how many tacks we were using. All of the buildings he said were problems were ones that had rafters (they were all in the forest).

If you are staying in a cabin with rafters, maybe fold the tapestries over the rafter a little and safety pin it to itself. If you're not, you're going to have to be more creative. We're not banned from using any tacks at all, but it needs to be way reduced and kept to a minimum. No tack holes in conspicuous places, try to keep them out of the drywall, etc. The 'you may use tacks' notice is intended to be used at a 'regular camper' level, putting up agendas and schedules for youth groups, not on the level that we've been doing it. We need to chill it out a little.

That said, the next two events are at Sheppard, (not Miller) so don't worry about it too much for now.
