v0.10 Empower Warrior

DiscOH

Artisan
Empower Warrior can add up to 45 damage per hit from behind or 30 damage a hit for ranged attacks 10 minutes a day.

Why is this something we want in the game? Are there any reasons for these types of mechanics?

it's +1 damage per crit attack activated with max of 10 (15 with Empower Warrior), right? +2 damage per backstab?

More like:
Fighter: "20 Normal! 20 Normal!"

BBG: "Got your 20's. Magic Sleep! Magic Sleep!"

Fighter: "Mettle! Mettle!"

*Fighter stands in place for 4 seconds fighting Sleep*

BBG: "Spell Death! Spell Death!"

*Fighter can't use Cloaks or Banes, regrets not going Hobling for the Racial Dodges, thinks about using a Spell Parry but realizes that that is a Smart Defense, can only be used once before Meditating, and can't be used during Mettle anyway so he'd then have to take both Sleep Effects and he'd be dead either way....*

Fighter: "Xxxxxx." 'That sure was a good and fun use of 108 xp and some ritual slots!'

Eeeeeeehhhhhhhh, I think this is a pretty bad example of what typical combat would actually be.

More like:

Fighter: "20 Normal! 20 Normal!"

BBG: "Got your 20's. Magic Sleep! Magic Sleep!"

Fighter: "Spell Shield! Mettle!"

*Fighter stands in place for 4 seconds fighting Sleep*

Earth Caster Buddy: <jumps in front of Fighter buddy!>

BBG: "Spell Death! Spell Death!"

Earth Caster Buddy: "Spell Shield! Cloak!"

Fighter Buddy: Thanks, man! I'm good now!

Earth Caster Buddy: <jumps back behind fighter, replacing Spell Shields>

BBG: I am FOIIIIILLEEEEED!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any solo-character should be appropriately boned against a BBG. This is a team game, and examples of solo-play are bad examples.

So, this is a BBG with Innate Casting and swings like a truck? And two guys are duo-fighting it alone?

Yeah, they deserve to go to the circle for being stupid.

:)

So it sounds like the player who uses these abilities will have a bad time, and the plot team who deals with it will have a bad time.

Is there any reason for these skills to exist in this form?

Personally I would prefer to see this Ritual removed, and Critical and Back Attack stacks capped at 3. Critical Attacks then adding to Weapon Proficiencies for the purposes of two handed weapon bonus damage calculation.

One of the core design goals of v2 was to reduce damage bloat. The v0.10e state of Critical and Back attacks, as well as the existence of this Ritual, both run alarmingly contrary to this design goal.

....I utterly missed the entry about "rituals that need to be meditated between use."

That's....wow. Okay. That's....that makes no sense.

I still think the example presented is a poor example of a combative situation, but I think any criticism regarding how Spell Parry got wrecked is utterly justified.

To be clear, you would have rogue dodges available in addition to fighter mettle (since scouts get access to critical/back attack for minimum price).

Also, none of this damage has any incentive to be activated in front line melee.

This build paradigm:
  • Devalues melee
  • Creates issues for plot
  • Gives players incentives not to participate in multiple combats
  • Creates a bigger gap between scouts and other martial classes
  • Increases damage calls
  • Creates additional bookkeeping requirements
  • Makes takeouts even more frustrating
Are there any upsides to the skills/ritual as they currently exist?

Being a celestial templar also gives you access to high magic which helps too. There are lots of solutions that fix the situation, they just require you not being a Fighter.

At that point you're not a Fighter.

Scouts are the only class that can benefit fully from the empower warrior ritual. I don't think this thread can serve as a focus for fighter frustration except to say that, yes, they are worse than scouts.

Ehh, you can use 10 of each without ritual. The ritual is not really the issue imo, just adds to it.

I see the stacking of Critical and Back Attacks as a deliberate misstep versus v2’s stated design goals. I see this ritual as doubling down on that misstep.

I would see any changes that go against the stated intent of the transition to be issues, and would be deeply puzzled as to how they have made it through 10 revisions.
