For applied substances, like serious vorpal coating, it says it lasts for "the very next strike". Does that mean if I swing it and don't actually hit anything, I just swing it at the air, does it go away? What about if I swing and it gets blocked? Do you swing the extra damage until you hit them, or just for the very next time you call damage?

It lasts until the first surface it hits. So -- shield, body, sword, whatever. After you call the damage, it's gone.

Basically. Like, if you call your damage and it's a miss, then you still have it. But a hit (which can be magic armor'd, can hit a shield, what have you) still wipes any coating you have off the weapon.

My character is an archer, and he uses coated arrows (bolts, actually, because his primary weapon is a heavy crossbow). Anytime I chuck a bolt with a coating, I assume that the coating is gone with the bolt whether or not the target is hit. That's the disadvantage with bolts/arrows.

But, I can have my alchemist apply these coatings in his lab at a 2:1 ratio -- which is an advantage of weapons coatings in archery ... as is the ranged fighting.

Coated bolts/arrows ROCK!
