Visitor's Guide to Alliance Denver
Welcome to beautiful Colorado!

We love visitors! Part of the fun of traveling for LARP is being able to get to know more of our extended family from around the country. Colorado is rich in history, amazing food, and of course – larping! As we have had so many visitors, we wanted to give those of you coming up to the mile high city some suggestions for making your visit fun and enjoyable!

Is Altitude Sickness Really a Thing?
Yes. We cannot stress this enough. Altitude sickness affects everyone differently. You may not have any issues, or you may find yourself in need of more rest than normal. Denver is 5,280ft above sea level and our sites are up over 8,000ft so there is significantly less oxygen in the air.

A few things you should be aware of:
  • You may find yourself short of breath
  • You may develop a headache after exertion
  • You may find yourself feeling dizzy
  • You may feel more irritable than normal (it will feel similar to being "hangry")
Here are some good tips for managing altitude sickness:
  • Drink a lot of water. If you have a way to bring a water container that works with your costuming, even better.
  • If you get a headache, take ibuprofen or other forms of headache relievers. Please remember to pack some, just in case you need them.
  • If possible, get to Colorado a day early to allow for a rest day prior to the event. Travel can mess with sleep schedules. Arriving to game tired and dehydrated is one of the easiest ways to develop altitude sickness.
  • Pay attention to your body. If you feel out of sorts, not feeling well, or if something feels “off”, please seek the tavern and take time to rest, recuperate, and hydrate.
Which Airport is the Best to Fly into?
Denver International Airport is the home airport for Frontier Airlines, and a major hub for both United and Southwest. The cheapest flight options will likely be into Denver, however Frontier, United, American, and Delta all fly into Colorado Springs as well. There is more to do in Denver prior to game, and more of the local playerbase lives there. Colorado Springs Airport’s biggest pull is that it is much closer to the site.

I Want to Drive to Site. Should I be Worried about Snow?
Colorado is notorious for odd weather, especially in the spring. Our worst snow months are generally January – April, however May has given us snowy surprises. Be sure to check the weather prior to your departure. I-70 coming from the West Coast (going East bound) can get pretty bad if it snows; please take extra special care if you are driving in from that side of the mountains.

I’m Visiting on a Budget and Limited Gear. Do you Have Crash Space or Spare Gear?
Some of our players may have space or gear! Post to our Facebook Group if you’re looking for a place to crash and/or gear to borrow.

Where are the Best Places to Eat?
Denver is home to some amazing places to eat. We have many foodies among our local players, and they’re often happy to give suggestions. If you get a chance, brunch is its own culture in Denver, and there are several options for amazing brunch. To get you started, here’s a good list to help you out if you don’t feel like asking Yelp (please note that Yelp is actively used in Denver as well):

Amazing Burgers – Cherry Cricket has the best burgers and are local. Option 2: 5280 Burger Bar; for Colorado Springs and South Denver-Metro: Crave Real Burgers

Colorado Local Favorites –

For Denver: Citizen Rail, Euclid Hall, and Freshcraft. We’re listing three here as options to help you, but this list has even more delicious suggestions: Denver's "Must try" Eateries.

For Colorado Springs: Rudy's BBQ;

Breweries – First Draft (Self-Serve Craft Beer); There are many other breweries in Denver and Colorado Springs, and Pints Pub has the largest whiskey collection this side of the Atlantic. However please exercise caution if you aren’t from a location at high elevation. Alcohol will hit you harder and faster at these high elevations; you don’t need to drink much.

Brunch Recommendations – Snooze, an AM Eatery (Multiple in the Denver Metro Area), King's Chef (Colorado Springs)

What is There to See and Do in Denver?
Denver is a bustling young city, and the options are quite expansive. If you like ghosts or haunted tours, there are those aplenty here. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is a fantastic museum, and there is also the Botanic Gardens, the Art Museum, and our recently-revamped History Museum. There is a bustling nightlife, including Goth Nights at a few locations (try Milk, if you ever get a chance). Denver has a booming local music scene, and if you get a chance to check out Red Rocks Amphitheatre (whether for a concert or just to see it) you won’t regret it.

Is There Reliable Public Transportation?
Yes, Denver has excellent public transportation (including to and from the airport). Additionally our city has both Uber and Lyft (some of our players are drivers for both). Here’s a look at our Regional Transportation.

For Colorado Springs, public transportation is available, however on a smaller scale. You can see their bus routes here.

I Need a Ride to the Site; Help!
Post to our Facebook Group, and someone should be able to hook you up! We strongly recommend arranging rides well in advance of the event.

Is There a Grocery Store Near Site?
There is a Wal-Mart in Woodland Park, which is the nearest city to the site. It is roughly a 25-minute drive from site, should you need any last-minute supplies!

So… Weed’s Legal, Right?
Yes. Weed in Colorado is legal, you’ll find the dispensaries here to be friendly, helpful, and educational. If you would like to visit the recreational dispensaries, there is a map of their locations and hours here.

As a reminder – Alliance Denver does NOT allow use of alcohol or drugs on our sites or at our events, nor do we allow players to be under the influence while onsite. Should you choose to partake of our booming recreational market here, we remind you that it must be done outside of Alliance functions. Additionally, as we play on a Girl Scout Camp, no smoking or vaping of any kind is allowed anywhere on site, including in your car. You must entirely leave the site to smoke anything or vape. Don't come back high.

Please be aware, it is illegal to have any cannabis at Denver International Airport, and if you are driving home, officers in Kansas particularly have been known to check cars.

Come here, have an awesome time, but please be considerate and law-abiding.
