Weapon help

Hello,

I have been preparing for a while for my first LARP event ever and I have purchased a sword (after trying and failing several times to make a weapon myself) that I am fairly certain is acceptable according to the Alliance rulebook, but I am a worrywart and paranoid that it will be rejected when I arrive at an event, leaving me with no way to participate. What should I do to ensure that I will 100% have a weapon that will pass safety inspection? Thank you for your help and I am sorry if this is in the wrong place or has been asked before (used the search function and didn't find anything useful).

Hey there! I'm the new player rep, Evan. Feel free to reach out to me here, on our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/allianceseattle/

or at newplayer@alliance-seattle.com. We look forward to you coming to check us out!

To answer your question, the reality is that no weapon is guaranteed to clear because every weapon is individually checked -every- game. Also, some weapon manufacturers design weapons towards different goals. An example is Calimacil, whose older designs were built for aesthetics, and while they looked great, they were much firmer, and many didn't clear.

Also, some weapons are built with cheap materials that have a ton of flex, insufficient padding, etc. Some don't have a sufficient amount of give/padding on the pommel.

My advice when it comes to purchasing weapons is this: always talk to the community first. Many of our attendees make use of latex weaponry, and can give you advice, so you aren't potentially wasting your money. Some of them also do commissions.

Also, it helps to see if someone can lend you a weapon in the event yours doesn't clear. We have a great group of players, and usually someone who has some bad luck can get a hand, but it helps to have that backup plan prepped, rather than trying to get help on site at the last minute.

If you have a link to your weapon, pop it here. That can definitely assist me in giving it a pre-evaluation.

Thank you very much for the quick reply! Here's the link to the weapon I purchased: http://www.darkknightarmoury.com/p-7573-larp-great-sword.aspx

Would the Facebook page be a good place to request a commission or arrange for a backup? If this one doesn't work out, I would really like the idea of buying from within the community, that seems pretty cool.

Once again, thank you for the advice and help, I appreciate it very much.

Epic Armory has a good track record, so you outta be okay. Please note that I did not guarantee that you would be okay, only that they seem to have a pretty solid pass rate at our games.

The Facebook page is definitely the best place to go for any information about rides or loaner equipment. Our Facebook groups are very active, while the forums only cater to a few of us.

Thanks,
-Rick

If push comes to shove, and you're using a one handed edged weapon, we'll make sure you have a rep from monster camp. Please though make sure you bring your own rep, as we can't give out loaners to everyone. If you do use a loaner, make sure it comes back, and think about building us a boffer ultra-light in return so we have more loaners to give out. :)

With the sword in question being a 2 hander (56 inch weapon), I would recommend having a backup basic boffer built. Two handers are pretty rare in monster camp.

I have seen that exact sword pass before. Again, each run of a manufacturer's weapon could be different, but the weapon tends not to be too hard and seems to hold up well to regular use.

Two-handed weapons are tough as they tend to be "Whippy" meaning they flex too much on a swing. So building one really comes down to the core you use. Typically, a 0.60 core or 0.75 core. The good thing about those size cores are that pool noodle tends to fit just right over the top of them without needing extra padding.
