Official Weapons Marshall notice:

Alliance Denver Weapons Marshalls have spoken with our chapter owner, Jesse Grabowski, and put together the following advisory statement about use of CPVC in weapons for our local chapter:

Alliance Denver generally cautions against use of CPVC (which is different from regular PVC) as a material for the core of boffer weapons -- but to be clear: use of CPVC is not outright banned in Alliance Denver.

Recommended uses:
  • Alliance Denver recommends that CPVC is not used for any weapons larger than the "Small Weapon" category. In other words, the chapter recommends that 1/2" CPVC is not used beyond a length of 24", which is the maximum length core for something in the Small Weapon category.
  • If you're in a real bind, and seriously need to make something in the Short Weapon category, 3/4" CPVC could be used to produce a core that is of a maximum length of 33", which is the max length for a Short weapon core. Nevertheless, we recommend that you use 1/2" regular PVC or a different material instead.
  • Alliance Denver highly discourages use of any size CPVC for any core longer than 33" in length, or anything in the Long weapon category or larger. Boffersmiths are cautioned that Denver Weapons Marshalls believe that it's highly likely that the bendiness and whip of CPVC used longer than 33" will result in failure on weapons inspection.

What's the difference between CPVC and PVC?
CPVC has a smaller diameter of the whole pipe than PVC, and oftentimes the pipe wall itself is more narrow than PVC. Overall, this results in CPVC being bendier and causing more "whip" in weapons when used as its core.

How can you tell the difference? Two good ways! One, ask the dude in the hardware store where you buy it. Two, check the printing on the actual pipe. It will say PVC, or CPVC. Three, usually - but not always or foolproof - PVC pipe is brilliant white in color; CPVC is often cream colored.

TLDR: If you've got some CPVC stock kicking around your garage, it's probably safe for daggers. Might be safe for claws. Probably won't pass for use in anything longer than claws.
