So, I suspect you've found this website because you've done some roleplaying games, but are new to the whole "live-action roleplay" bit. I'd say the first thing you should figure out is what LARP is right for you, both in terms of genre and play style. The Alliance LARP (us), for instance, is a medieval(ish) fantasy LARP that uses padded weapons and small bean bags to deliver weapon blows and magical effects, and running around in the woods, often in the dark. Our events are typically Friday night through Sunday afternoon, and players are more or less expected to remain in-character for the entire time, even when sleeping. If none of that sounds appealing (maybe you prefer sci-fi, or don't cotton to actually striking people with padded weapons), this one likely isn't for you (though there are other LARPs that might suit you better). If, on the other hand, that sort of thing sounds right up your alley, then your imagination has definitely found a home.
The first thing I think anyone looking to play should do is buy a rulebook. You can get it as a downloadable electronic version FOR FREE here, and peruse through it. You can also purchase a hardcopy through our site. The rulebook has a good introduction to what a game might be like, tips on costuming and designing your character, as well as the nuts and bolts of how to play. Mike V (the owner of the whole shebang) has even posted up some sample pages in this post.
Once you've given all that a looksy, introduce yourself! Let us know who you are, how old you are, where you'll be coming from (sometimes people like to carpool), and what you think you'd like to be doing. If you've had any gaming experience, fill us in! Our player handbook is still forthcoming as our writing team continues to work on it, so ask any questions you might have. Be prepared, though, for folks to suggest that some details are best discovered in-game.
The world of Alliance Oregon is played on the frontier of a newly-discovered island, where a young, inexperienced but good-natured noble Lord was quested to explore and establish a new community for some of those who had lost their homes and livelihoods where they came from, and are seeking a fresh start in their lives. This new land does have its challenges, though: giant insects that crawl across the landscape and a raiding force of minotaurs and bullkyn seeking to enslave all who cross their path; as well as its own share of oddities: a strange pale girl with green stripes and mysterious powers, and portals in the earth leading to places of raw evil. The world we've written is intended to allow you, the player, a number of opportunities to explore not just surrounding land, but in so doing, your own character's path and place in the world. We hope to keep you entertained and excited about each adventure that presents itself, and look forward to every chance we get at both.
