Weapons Safety: Waylay Tips

Per player request for clarification, a note for characters who have the skill Waylay:

You may only perform a Waylay with a weapon that has a waylay tip on it, or a boffer which is made entirely of open-cell foam. Alliance does not require waylay tips to be built into all weapons. It's YOUR responsibility as the player using that skill to ensure that the boffer physrep that you're holding has a waylay tip before you try to use that skill.

Claws can't waylay.

Nice store-bought latex weapons don't have open-cell foam waylay tips, and cannot be used to waylay.

In other words, if you pick up a disarmed weapon from an opponent, or borrow someone's physrep in the heat of battle -- check first if it's got that 2" of squishy foam at the waylay tip before you Waylay with it.

Backup from PDF p. 69 of the ARB on this:

This skill can be performed with any of the following weapons: one handed edged, one handed blunt, crossbow, small weapon, thrown weapons, and any object made entirely of open-cell foam that is not a thrown weapon. It may not be used with two handed weapons, spears, staves, bows, bolts, arrows, claws, or shields.

This skill may only be performed by a weapon which includes a safe and valid Waylay Tip. It is the responsibility of the person performing the Waylay to ensure the weapon they are using has a Waylay Tip.

In order for the waylay to be successful, the attacker’s weapon must be within 6 inches of the contact point. In other words, you cannot hold your sword by the blade end and waylay someone from a distance.

Please let me know if you've got any questions about the boffer physrep requirements here.

Did Jesse make a new local rule that I missed?

Hey Porch, there's a lot of material in those threads you linked. I'm not sure what your question is -- can you clarify?

If your question is about the rules of how the Waylay skill works, I'll call in David as rules -- TLDR on my post re: weapons safety: Don't try to use this skill with a physrep that doesn't have a waylay tip.

My apologies to Porch and everyone else whom I have righteously confused -- I am the reason we can't have nice things... like reading comprehension. My eyeballs skipped right over the words in the rulebook that said that waylaying with thrown weapon reps which are made entirely of open-cell foam is cool -- and I skipped right on to the carve out that talks about open cell foam objects that aren't thrown weapons. I've caused the confusion -- sorry about that! I have gone back and amended my original post in this thread to correct that.

Please pay attention to the rulebook, not my summary -- Nevertheless, overall TLDR: Open cell foam squishiness needed to waylay. The end.

Thanks and sorry again,
Trace
