A request to the webmaster

Would it be possible to create a page on this site that had all the chapters listed on a map? More specifically their campsite. I'm looking to travel more and it makes things easier then individually searching the addressess of the site. (Since we all know that the 'address' on the chapter page might be a few hours away from where the game is actually played) I understand chapters have various campsites, but one location per chapter on a nationwide map would be helpful.

Not a pressing concern by any means, just a request.

thanks,
-Joe

As a few chapters have multiple sites, it might be better if each chapter posted their own sites under their own chapter OOG boards.

On there own boards would be great as well. However, with all the chapters on one page it's a little easier to guage where you can travel to easily. Just a request. So if, for instance, someone wanted to come check out a game for the first time, they wouldn't have to navigate the forums, find the link to the chapter website in someone's sig, then search that site. Just have a link like "Looking to play" and all the chapters in one place, on a map. Places with multiple sites could choose one main and have the others on their boards.

Not everything is best accessed through the forums. You can cut out quite a few of those steps by going here:

Yes but those addresses are not the campsites. I just feel it would be helpful to have a visual map for new players to find a chapter in their area. And for existing players to see that other chapters are not as far away as they might think.

I think what the others were saying is that it depends on the chapter and specific event. I know for our chapter there have been 3 or maybe even 4 different sites used based on availability and even more places used for fight practices within about a hundred mile radius of the central metropolitan area here (the Twin Cities, MN). It's just not something that will always have a clear, point-and-click answer and is always subject to change.

I understand that. However you can't tell me SoMN doesn't have a 'main' site. If not, pick one. Understandably not every event happens at that site, but you can post more specific event details in the forums. I don't need a hyperlinked to every event updated weekly listing, just a map of the country with some stars in places events are held.

All I am saying is there is not an easy to use, visual, one stop shop to find Alliance games across the country. So Johnny NeverLarp'd, can say "hey this might be fun. Where are the events?" Without having to try to figure out why Alliance New Hampshire has a MA address, or Alliance South Michigan's address is in a suburb without a park in sight.

It doesn't need to replace that chapter page. I am suggesting an additional page being added to the website. I know it is not a dire need, but I think it would be something that would be well advised to create.

For one days we generally use a site in Jordan, MN. For weekend events this summer, seemingly exclusively, we've been using our Camp Stearns site.

Even if you listed multiple sites with a note as to which chapter used which sites, it'd be helpful.

(Although honestly, it beats some of the linking a certain predecessor to Alliance uses for their chapters. Many of those links are deader than Elvis.)

why doesn't this go into the website project that the publicity committee should be working on? the whole site needs redone... why do just one tiny part

Got one started on Google MyMap. Contains the site locations for WA and OR. It also has the Faire Play site. If you PM me your chapter's locals I will add them to the map. This is a work in progress, obviously.

We could also have a link to each site's home chapter's web page, or if they only use the National Boards a link to their OOG section of the boards can be included on the map.

And, if you are willing to maintain it, you could also list the dates from the current calendar as part of each site's description on the map's landmark.

The links to the home chapters are already on the main website under "chapters".

As for the dates, I wouldn't ask anyone to do it myself as that can become an incredible headache.

AS this seems to be evi1r0n's project, I would let him speak for himself.

Having a link from the maps back to the chapter's home pages would not be superfluous as it is a link from the map, and not a link for the Chapters list on the National website ... and, therefore, is not redundant. The magic of the World Wide Web is it's ability to provide multiple links from multiple locations to relevant information.

From the bolding of his name in your previous reply, it did sound somewhat snarky. It is just I have a touchy trigger when someone offers to do something for a game and those that don't suddenly suggest turning his simple project into a more complex one that would require constant maintenance.

I was actually going to do the same thing but he beat me to it.

But like you said, I should let him speak for himself. As for myself, I sent him the info on all the sites SF uses so I'm done here.

mis-interpreted paralinguistics, once again, seems to triumph.

The bolding WAS meant to emphasize the originator of the idea, who deserves the credit. If the originator wants to accept ideas offered, fine - and if not, that's fine too. While the act of gathering information, organizing it, and presenting it - and keeping it up to date - is a responsibility, it is, ultimately, up to the project manager to decide how to manage the project.

At least, that's how we do it in the rest of the Open Source world.

I wouldn't mind adding links. I wouldn't mind maintaining the project either. I get easily bored and this is something to do.

Not to be presumptuous but would I be able to get some dragon stamps for this? I don't really care either way (the main reward is having something to do) but it's certainly a bonus. :D

If certain owners or reps wish to add more to the map for their specific chapter I can give them the permissions to do so. I'm not sure if it needs to be said but if you guys wanna use this on any Alliance site, go right ahead. That's the point of having it.
