banquet events... thoughts.

An idea I've been tossing around for a while. Banquet events would be one day/night roleplay only events. Imagine something similar to a murder mystery (who done it?) party. These could be organized rather easily and cheaply and allow the strong roleplayers of the game to shine. There have also been discussions in the past regarding offering more rewards for roleplay. This would be a perfect conduit. Combat at these events would be minimal to none so an overwhelming number of NPCs would not be necessary. If the location allows it, perhaps a simple trap mod.

Thoughts? Ideas? Other ways to refine/expand this? Or why this would be a terrible idea and how I'm a bad person for even suggesting it?

SoMN has held banquet events the last two Novembers, and they have both been a great time. These events were both weekend events, with a hearty portion of time Saturday night devoted to the banquet itself, with the rest of the event being normal plot stuff. Food, entertainment, and chatting makes a great change for us hard working adventurer types. ;)

These kinds of events don't need to be single days or strictly non-combat, as you suggest, but rather, just input into weekends to give the PCs a chance to relax for a bit of good ol' RP, in my opinion. And more NPCs, not less as you said, should be needed for banquets, since they are able to provide gobs of plot during these kinds of gatherings. PCs get bored just talking to each other.

But in my opinion, banquets should not be the only way to encourage great RP. Lack of combat, or presence of combat, shouldn't affect a player's RP.

Yes, I'm aware they don't need to be single day events. The idea however was that these would be something extra, aside from the regularly scheduled events. Something that would be easy to organize and inexpensive in that it would not run the same kind of bill as a 2 day event. I was thinking of this more from a buisiness stand point than as a player. With a 1 day event that doesn't require renting a camp grounds for the weekend you cut costs significantly and allow for a larger net gain which can then be put back into the game and help it grow. Think of it as a chapter fund raiser dinner.

I'm confused. are you asking about fairedays or modules? or just getting together and pretending everything is IG and having no logistics, no XP earned, no treasure policy, and charging for it?

It would be pretty similar to a fair day. Logistics would be simple since its a roleplay event and XP would definitely be given. And yes, a reasonable price would be charged.

TC Usually does something along those lines for the end of the year, including an Auction in the action and recognition of different pcs (they have a system of Virtues/Values that are recognized) They are usually very entertaining, I try to travel out as often as possible to partake.

As long as there is nothing in the bylaws prohibiting such a thing (which i doubt there is), then I would assume it would be treated as a faireday or module for logistical purposes, but the chapter just needs to be clear to it's player-base on the rules of the "Event" (ie no combat or whatever). Sounds pretty straight forward to me.

We've done a dinner event, where we rent a hall, for the last 5 years. We have logistics at 10 with game on at noon and then we go until everything is done. Usually this is between 8pm and midnight. The theme is always a special gathering at the local nobility's manor where that noble is available the whole time to interact with. We have a special meal unlike any we do the rest of the year. One year we even had cornish game hens. We put out games like chess, checkers, cards, etc... and usually the pc's get involved in little tournaments with them. Just adds one more thing for them to do when all the npc's are already being talked to. We also have an IG auction where we choose some plot based thing for the funds to go to, (part of our plotline last year was that part of the town got destroyed so the funds went to rebuilding town). We do awards and appointments, squiring, etc..., then we do an OOG auction with donations that we get for that purpose. We always designate a reason for those funds as well, last year it was to put towards our permanent site fund.

We always have a great turn out, all the npc's come as some type of plot hook or connection or the needed servers and guards etc... but try to rotate those as it gets very boring being a guard for 8-12 hours. The pc's love being able to relax and actually get to talk to those npc's who are always hard to get with for more than a couple minutes at WE events.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about what we do let me know. I'm more than happy to help. These have become our big fundraiser for the year as well as our time to relax and hang out with friends in an IG atmosphere.
