Blighted Crops and June 2013 Downtimes

Since the end of the last event (April 2013) the crops in the immediate area around Tarndale (within a few miles of the Meeting Hall at least) have been stunted and are withering away. While there is not an immediate food shortage, many of the townsfolk are beginning to ration food in anticipation of a particularly light harvest. Many of the local farmers have begun to abandon their stricken fields and are working on fields farther away from town. While some farm folk are willing to still make food available to non-natives, the prices have increased due to limited supply, and many farmers are refusing to sell their goods to non-native Tarndalians altogether.

Because we don't want to ask our players to alter their eating arrangements based on In-Game circumstances, we'll be representing the food shortage at game by asking people to do one of the following:
  • Expend a downtime action helping the town in a way that improves the food situation. You could help on a specific farm ("Daybreak," "the O'Field's Farm", etc), generally "on the farms" (you'll be told where that is in your downtime response), by hunting/gathering for the town, fishing in Silent Lake for the town, etc. (Note: The O'Glades, O'Creeks, Planters, O'Ridges, and Tillers are all families with large nearby farms that are blighted with unusable land, and all of the non-farmer local townies (Elder Osmond, the Mercators, Clarks, Smiths, O'Lakes, Fishers, Carpenters, Tanners, Millers, Clays, Planters, Archers, O'Dales, and a few others) that don't have large farms have all lost their household gardens.)
  • Expend a downtime action acquiring food from somewhere else to sustain yourself (keep in mind the restrictions on portal traffic or on bulk goods that your character may be aware of if they've traveled through it in the past (check your old downtimes)).
  • Use an appropriate Craftsman (Farmer, Hunter, etc) skill at check-in and forgo the appropriate silver (if you have several applicable craftsman skills, you only need to forfeit one silver) to sustain yourself.
  • Pay two silver at check-in to represent the increased price of feeding yourself for the last two months.

All of the above costs only need to be paid out on Friday, not at each logistics. We'll have some simple way of keeping track of who is choosing which option to make it easy for Logistics, probably a box where you can put coin and slips of paper with your character's name and what option you've chosen on the picnic table out front of the Logistics cabin. If you come up with a creative way to feed yourself or help the food situation in Tarndale that we haven't thought of, include it as one of your downtime actions and we'll let you know how it works out!

On a somewhat related note, we are writing the weekend with the picnic in mind, so we're working to make sure that picnic-goers won't look like jerks throwing a party during a food shortage. :)
