Bow question.....

I never said it was the better of the two methods... just that I had seen stuff failed for it... :-)

Okay so I have one person saying yes I can and another saying no.
So can I or can't I use PVC joints in the making of a bow?

JP you have a pretty decent point. Basically what I've learned as far as weapons go, figure out what the people you play with are going to allow, and figure out how you can work within that. Yea its often arbitrary, but oh well. ;)

If you used epoxy to glue together pvc joints good epoxy basically makes those two pieces one. I don't see why this wouldn't work to make a passable weapon considering. But then again any particular chapter can refuse any particular weapon. So its really very much up to them. Make the weapon, do some tests, do some tests for them if they are willing to give it a look over and then see what they say. But have a contingency or backup play as in extra materials or an extra weapon you know you can use just to be safe...

Dave, some people aren't going to be as exacting, or think everything through the way you, or Will Kinkaid (to name the local Master Foamsmith of HQ/CT), or Mike/Drenten might. (I love that I refer to my own boyfriend by both his IG and OOG name when talking to Alliance friends.)

The only way to check if something was epoxy'd correctly rather than Elmer's Glued (or otherwise ill-built and likely to break and hurt people) would be to make people bring it to game Un-foamed, have the core OKed, and then foam it at logistics. Which would be time-consuming for everyone involved. It kinda sucks that the rules are made to marshall the lowest common denominator and alternatives are arbitrary, but right now it's the best that can be done in a RAPIDLY expanding system.

I feel like I'm always playing devil's advocate to you, even though I agree like 90% of the time. :D

lol its okay, I know you just like to cause trouble when/wherever you can... ;)

It is true that some places will allow composite cores, (If you've seen a Dave Darling bow all of his are.) but its a much more case by case basis and only if they are willing to take the extra time to look at your construction. You certainly shouldn't count on it for many reasons phedra has said. Once again in the rulebook it allows for the possibility of using a weapon built specially, but doesn't guaranty anything.

All I'm saying is that you can try this. And there is some hope it might be allowed, but its small and your probably better off going with more standard build methods. And heck, I've even moved to using a heat gunned pvc bow because I actually like the weight because its a blocking only weapon.

Anyways happy weapon building! Don't loose too much sleep over it.

so i tried the boiling water method last night and built my first bow. it came out decent. one end is slightly more curved than the other but over all i think it looks okay. so now i want to try the composite method and use pvc for the curved core and kite spar for the rest. What epoxy works best? as i know there are different varieties. When i was in college for art projects i used to use this type that you had to mix together that was practically indestructible, but i dont know if i can find it again cause i cant remember the brand/name.

also.. a completely different question if i have 5/8 wall closed cell foam but the inner hole is to big for the kite spar. is it legit to cut out a chunk of the wall and just wrap it tighter around the core. Then tape it closed? or would this how damage the overall integrity of the weapon?

You can cut it and flex it. You'll want to make sure the join is flush the entire length of the foam. Also, depending on how much you end up having to cut off, the foam overall will break down a bit faster (by virtue of being stretched), but it should last a few months of use at least.

Just bring back nerf and call it a day...

Lol.

You know those new Nerf swords they came out with last year?

I wonder if some Larps are actually allowing them.

They bend too much. I considered putting foam around them, but they still bend too much...go figure
