Claw construction

How much of a claw's minimum of 28 inches must extend beyond the knuckle of the hand it's attached to? It seems like a weapon with a 28 inch length and no gripping surface, mounting only at its base, would be extremely fragile and completely unreliable in combat.

I'm really hoping a significant portion of it's length can be secured to the back of the hand or forearm, otherwise it doesn't seem like a claw could even survive being used in a strike, not to mention a block. I'd guess that about a third of the total length would need to be mounted to make a claw stable.

Regarding construction materials, would latex around a 3/8" or 1/4" fiberglass core be acceptable for claws?

"Claw" refers basically to a short sword-style weapon using red tape. It doesn't need to attach to the hand and is wielded and constructed very similarly to a sword rep.

No wonder it's so hard to find example pictures. I was looking for something more complex than a red short sword. Thanks much.
