Costuming Sources

Newbie
So, I'm hobbling together my first costume and I was struck with the realization that we are sort of a specialized market, aren't we?

I figured we could start a thread for local businesses to support and any online gems we run across. Because making us look good, makes us look good. ;)

For Costuming, locally, we have Gott-a-Costume who is apparently giving us a discount if we mention Alliance Larp. 10%?
So far, used items for craft cutting on Ebay have been very useful for fur and leather type stuff but the shipping costs can be brutal.
For footwear, Viking Leathercrafts seems decently priced for the initial investment. It seems like they sell to a lot of Larp players, because they offer two different, affordable non-slip sole options for all of their leather boots and shoes.

The Denver Opera House has a prop sale every other year or so and you can pick up some beautiful, professionally put together textiles for remarkably cheap. This year's sale is over, but I'll post a reminder for next year in case anyone wants to investigate for themselves.

Has anyone else found something worth sharing? If anyone finds an affordable place for beads, feathers, costume jewelry ect, I'll buy you a drink at the tavern.

Hey Lacey,

Great post! Don't forget we have some craftsmen among us as well. I know Alicia Skarbek has been asked by a few poeple to help make and adjust some costumes. Feel free to reach out to her on the facebook page.

Ummm,, wwwwell, as I said I make costumes for a living and can be useful for more creature-y type races like the wylderkin but also for Orc stuff, Biata stuff, horns, whatever. I will be opening for new projects September 20th, so I wont be able to have stuff ready for the -first- event but um, I dunno, for future refference : ) - http://artsquish.deviantart.com/

Good to know... why jus ttoday a player was asking about MWE horns....

If you had some props available at our events, feel free to contact me about including them for sale to players in our Merchant's guild building.

This of course goes to everyone.

WOW!

If you have not taken a look at the link above I HIGHLY suggest you do. LOVE LOVE LOVE the Lion outfit. Though I don't think I could bring myself to LARP in it...it is just TOO beautiful. Amazing work! I cannot wait to see more :)

Thankyou : )

Heh...yyyyeah youwouldnt really want to larp (atleast on hot weather, cold weather is fine for a while I guess) in the full-head masks but I do a half-mask style specifically for larp that works out muuuuch better. I have several that will be debuteing for this game via freinds and a few other variants that accomodate larping-needs better than the fully-enclosed whole-head situations.: D

We have some pretty serious Kin costumes going on at Chicago/Wayside. Here's the FB of Sean https://www.facebook.com/sean.vermilyea/photos The deer costume is his larp costume, which is obviously much different than his fursuit that you can also see in his public FB pictures. So definitely come up with a cool costume, but keep in mind that it's a different venue than, like, a Convention. If in doubt, go lighter makeup/cheap costuming your first time out and then once you're comfortable with what you want for larp, then spend more money/time.

B.Barber's stuff is very cool (you are very talented!), but I would be worried about wearing her best stuff to larp, at least until I knew the materials and if they could withstand a stray blow. You aren't supposed to hit people in the head, but it can still happen.

My stuff is actually larp- durable for the most part and i do modifications for extra strength for the items build specifical for-larp. It mostly comes down to how much people want to put up with over the course of an event.

This is more obnoxious: http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/ ... 6i3uxm.jpg

Than this: http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/ ... 6jiwzq.jpg

The full head has moving parts, heats up more, and obstructs eating.
The half-mask style is much more versatile and obstructs nothin. Both can take a smack, but the half-mask does better due to lacking moving parts and is actually ren-enforced for the odd boffer to the face.

Edit: And the base of the things are cast urethane plastic. Has some give (is not shatter prone) and is waterproof.

How much do you sell something like the larp version for?
That half mask is still super awesome!
Beautiful work!

B.Barber :noway: How much for a custom made half mask? I can get you an image of the colors for my Made-Fur-You tail that I'm going to be wearing, short tail version, the long would inhibit movement and potentially get messy too easily. I think that your half mask would be a WAY better way to go for my character then what I have planned presently. Did a trial wear of my costume and the nose is catching too much heat and condensation from exhaling. :tears:

On a side note, I'd love to commission you for a full mask for my fursona too. Best char reference I have for him would be a piece done by Idess. Will contact you through other channels regarding that.

I will direct yall to some info for my next opening : ) http://artsquish.deviantart.com/journal ... -393345796

In that link is another link to my terms of service and my catalogue thing that goes over some base-priceing. I book up in 3 and 4 month periods so pretty much if you want something made in the next 3/4 months, next week will be the time to submit a quote request/order.
