Let's go on a hypothetical journey.
Johnny Gambler, a PC, wears a "cheater chain" shirt, a shirt that is cloth but resembles chain mail. He is awarded appropriate armor points, as it resembles chain, but is not real material.
"3 points: Chain/Scale/Brigandine. The material must appear to be one of the following: chain mail tight enough to provide protection, metallic scale of at least 1/16" thick, or brigandine with plates of at least 1/16" woven within."
He then throws on a robe to sneak into macguffin castle, but his chain shirt is hidden. Since his cheater chain is obscured, does it no longer appear to be chain mail, and does Johnny lose his chainmail armor points? Do the points awarded by wearing fake armor have object permanence?

There are some interpretations on what "appears" exactly means. Please clarify at your convenience.

Armor Points are based on what is appropriately worn, not what is visible.

Covering, hiding, or obscuring any worn armor does not negate its protective value, regardless of if it is “real” armor or not.
