Favorite Movie Sequence

Every so often, there will be a moment in a movie that really moves us. Whats yours and why?

There are several:

In Sin City where Lucille reveals her missing hand "HE MADE ME WATCH!!"....gives me the chills every time.

In Full Metal Jacket where Gomer Pyle cries and eats a jelly donut....knowing full well what's going to happen...poor fat guy. :(

The siren song of O Brother Where Art Thou.

I will likely think of more later and post them appropriately....nice thread Ali! :D

My goodness, too many. Off the top of my head:

Clarence wanting to live in "It's a Wonderful Life"

The entire battlefield sequence in "Children of Men" -- one hand held camera following the main character for ten minutes with no cuts, adds tremendous suspense!

Mr. Incredible saying to his wife "I'm not strong enough."

"We're knights of the Round Table, we dance whenever we're able ... we eat ham and jam and spam a lot!"

The main two I can think of right now are:

The "Let it Be" sequence in Across the Universe. The cinematography in this sequence is amazing; and honestly brings me to tears every time.

Casablanca. There are many scenes in this movie that are those stellar sequences, but the main one that always sticks out for me is the part during Die Wacht Am Rhein and La Marseillaise. Essentially the Nazis are singing one of the Nazi patriotic songs in Ricks, which is in neutral Casablanca vs occupied France. In turn, Victor Laszlo, the patriot whom the Nazis are hunting, tells the band to play the France national anthem. Rick nods the okay, and the band begins to play; and every person who is french belts their national anthem over the Nazis, who eventually quiet themselves. Absolutely just an amazing subtle piece of writing that is part of the reason Casablanca is one of my favorite movies.

The car chase scene from "The Rock," best car chase ever filmed.

The fighting retreat from the alien nest in "Aliens" (the first time, when pretty much all the marines die.

The last minutes of Pan's Labyrinth. It's all so... beautiful...

"I taught young boys to drop fire on each other..." The sacrifice scene from Apocalypse Now. The cinematography, the poem, the whole scene is extremely well done.

Wall-E and Eve's dance in space. If Wall-E doesn't win an academy award for best animated film, I'm going to write an angry letter. This is the most beautifully animated scene I've ever watched, and it's marvelously romantic.

"Mien fuhrer, I can WALK!" Dr. Strangelove, ushering in the nuclear apocalypse. I've analyized every inch of this film to death, and this scene is so beautifully dark, ironic, and... well, triumphant I have to include it here.

The Hunchback of Notredame (the Disney, animated version), the "Hellfire" sequence. I will never be the same after watching that.

Our film tastes are similar, I agree with all of those and the ones you posted above (You should have played my Identify the Movie game). "Hunchback" is one of my favorite Disney films ever.

Oooh, Pan's Labyrinth ending. Definitely a great scene.

Here are a couple of mine--

This scene from Good Will Hunting (language):

The ending to Final Fantasy X (so sad!). It's a video game, but it may as well be a movie:

The ending to American History X. Great movie & great message:

The end sequence in First Blood (Rambo), "It's over Johnny. It's over!":

The ending to The Green Mile, V for Vendetta, Twelve Monkey's, Fight Club, and I'm sure I could go on. I love movies!

I agree with almost everyone's up there but here are a few of mine....

"That's no moon....it's a space station" I always giggle with glee.

the scene when obiwan kenobi cuts off the furry guy's arm in A New Hope in the bar..there's blood on the floor (which wouldn't happen but we forget that) and it was the FIRST MOVIE i ever saw...i was eating strawberry magic shell on ice cream at the time and it rocked.

"Join me and we can rule the universe as father and son" i was like WHAT??? ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME???? ITS HIS DAD??? (i never read the books so it was a shocker for me)

The moment that Captain VonTrapp starts singing with his kids. It's like you realize his wall was finally broken by the magic of music....

Pans Labrynth the creature with eyes on his hands TERRIFYING!!!!!!! I have to watch half the sceen every time.

Who's Eating Gilbert Grape when johnny's character beats up his mentally challenged little brother and he freaks out because he realizes he was so frustrated and he took it out physically on a kid who can't help it.....gets me every time....

Dead Calm when you find out the guy killed the dog and shark speared it to the back of the door... There are two rules in horror films..1. don't kill a kid, 2. dont' kill a pet....HE BROKE ONE OF THE RULES...haunts me...

"They were such good, strong hands" Neverending Story..the rock muncher who couldn't hang onto his friends with his hands..oh man breaks my heart. Realizing the Nothing was just children losing their ability to imagine...OH MAN I VOWED as a kid that i would never let that happen.

"Man.....is in the forest" Finding out Bambi's mother was NOT coming back

A Snoodle's Tale - Veggitales....I cry through almost the entire thing every time and i've seen it so many times. Its just it REALLY gets to me. It's heart touching....

Jacob's Ladder - finding out neither life was real at the end...WHEW..blew me away

Last 3 minutes of The Usual Suspects...finding out who Kaiser Soce (sp?) is...

Dances with Wolves - when the army comes back finally and Dances WW will only speak native to them because he has "become" native. Also the General or whoever he was blowing his brains out after sending John Dunbar to the outpost.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (OLD ONE) - "We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams"

V for Vendetta - the entirety of the reverse "end times". The twisted "christianity" religious state that was created. Weirded me out and made me think ALOT.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium - belief is all it takes to make magic happen.

Big - getting a grown up job and paid alot to play with toys and tell them what you think. I WANT THAT JOB!

Princess Bride - "Have fun storming the castle" (actually too many memorable moments to mention)

LOTR: Two Towers - the realization of Galdalf the White when they thought they were about to get zapped by Sarumon (sp?) I hated how mean everyone was to smeagle...I always felt so sorry for him.

I'll add more later.

That would be George Bailey. Clarence is his guardian angel.

Christopher Walken and the angel, Gabriel, in The Prophecy: "I'm an angel. I kill firstborns while their mamas watch. I turn cities into salt. I even, when I feel like it, rip the souls from little girls, and from now till kingdom come, the only thing you can count on in your existence is never understanding why."

Since it's a movie now I can list "Epiphany" from Sweeney Todd. It's the moment when Sweeney finally completely snaps and decides he's just going to kill everyone who comes into his barbershop. Johnny Depp was pretty good, but for absolute intensity you need to see the video of the live tour with George Hearn as Sweeney.

On a more sensitive note I'll go for Highlander. The entire scene when Heather dies of old age, with Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever" playing. I say Connor's lines along with him I cry every time.

Gotta mention "Hellfire" from Hunchback just like Amelia and Mike V. I'm waiting for Disney to put that one on Broadway. It's been playing in Germany for maybe 10 years now, with the original ending of the novel. Instead of that they gave us Tarzan and Mary Poppins. Why, oh why?

HP: Goblet of Fire, when Harry ports back into the arena with Cedric's dead body. The emotion from evertone there is absoutely realistic. Although there are other inklings of it, it's that moment that, to me, signifies that "this ain't no kiddie story anymore". I was hoping for something similar from Sirius's death (and aftermath) but it just didn't hit home as well.

TELOKH you totally nailed a few of my faves with ST and HP and Highlander. I always cry at Highlander when heather dies as well!!

OKAY here's a couple of more that for me, the message in real life was intense....

the red pill/blue pill scene in Matrix

13th Warrior realization that "they're just men!" and they can die.

and a couple of David Bowie moments on film:
the look on his face when Sarah finally remembers the line and says "and you have no power over me" also when he's singing to her while playing with the glass globes...so hawt

David Bowie as the electrician in The Prestige. I was so excited to see him come out of retirement I screamed.

My favorite from that film is when they recite their "standing with my ancestors" line in unison before going into battle. I was playing a Barbar when that came out and I SOOOOO wanted a large group of us to do that exact speech before running into battle at an event.

Awesome moment.

I can't believe nobody (inculding me) named any from LotR yet. I have to say I love when the Treebeard suddenly realizes what Saruman has done and the Ents finally go to war. Also, the charge of the Rohirrim at the battle of Mina Tirith and King Theoden's "pep talk" just beforehand.

::points at the last moment from her first post:: LOTR gandalf the white discovery...

funny thing about trilogy flicks....i always like the 2nd one best....two towers, empire strikes back, jaws, rocky (when there were only 3)

One of my favorite fight scenes in a movie comes from Serenity. When 95 pound River Tam bounces Jayne Cobb all over the place...t'was awesome.

((good call marcena!))

I missed that one. And you Usual Suspects reference. That is one of my favorite films. I love that you can only talk about it to people who have seen it. Telling someone who hasn't seen it ruins the film when they actually wind up seeing it. I generally don't like Stephen Bladwin in anything, but he's good in this. Everyone is good.

Usual Suspects, definitely. Favorite from LotR was the scene in RotK where the hobbit sang at the king's supper while his son threw himself on an unbeatable enemy just to please his father. The imagery and music for that scene really got to me.

I always think of the scene in Good Morning, Vietnam! where Williams goes out into the bush to confront his young friend, and the shouted argument they have back and forth emphasizing his sudden reality that there is in fact a terrible war going on around him and he is a part of it.

Another one I have to add: Javert's suicide in Les Miserables, the 1992 version with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush. The book is good, the musical is great, but that movie was awesome. Geoffrey Rush is a genius.
