Gypsy Armor

Fellow Romani, I have a small problem. Well, it's actually pretty big- it's about the size of my torso. For the life of me I can't find armor that is both protective and suitably spirited. It's all black leather and brown leather and steel and chain and *yawn*. I've done a million sketches and nothing seems right. It's all too boring or impractical or whatnot. I have tried corsets, but my leather one is just not comfortable enough for combat and my velveteen one isn't enough when the Thunder Bugs start pouring over the wall... *shudder*

Can anyone think of any ideas for scholarly armor that would look good on a young gypsy lass?

Dear Cousin,

I do believe that you frequent the town of Stonehaven in Parna, no? In that town, I met an interesting barkeep by the name of Kon who has agreed to make me some armor that is not only functional, but also very colorful as well as easy to put on and take off - we do need to change our fashion as the moment suits us, no? I'll ask him to show you the progress he has made and hopefully that will inspire you.

You could probably also ask him to make you some armor more to your liking. Discuss things with him. He seems to be an agreeable sort.

May the forces of evil become confused on their way to your doorstep.

If you are formal capable and/or have the resources, I recommend acquiring a suit of Arcane Armor, a formal magic that can create mystical, invisible suits of armor that all but the burliest of warriors might wear. That way you can be as fashionable as you like, and still benefit from the protections needed.

Alternatively, maybe you need to find a suit of "scale mail". You could have each scale a different color, or even have a different picture on each one. I knew of one fellow who had his armor made of a metal with a sheen that would change color depending on the angle the sunlight struck it, much like the shell of a scarab.. maybe that would suit you?

Cousin Nigel, you are correct that I frequent Stonehaven. It's such a wonderful town! I love the new walls. Anyway, I shall seek out this barkeep and ask to see his armor for inspiration next time I'm in the area. Many thanks for the tip!

Gregor, I'm sadly not formal capable yet, and it will be a long time before I am- I only very recently learned my first sixth-circle spell. I have been saving my gold, though, so should a scroll of that kind be found, I hopefully will be able to acquire and use it. The scale idea is very intriguing, though. It might be a bit heavy, but the idea of having a iridescent multicolored scale vest appeals to me greatly! A full chest piece might be a bit much for a scholar like me, though a cropped vest would probably do nicely... Hm, I need to sketch this!

You could always ask your armorsmith to make it out of leather if you feel that metal would be too heavy for you. Then, you could ask every family member you meet to paint one in any way that they might like. Then, like the Romani of old, you would wear your family to battle, and each and every one of them would be protecting you.

Just a thought,

That is a simply wondrous idea! I don't know how well that would work in practice, but if not armor, then some other garment of this sort must be attempted. Perhaps a long scarf, with each member of the familia contributing a square. Maybe if I ever get a scroll of arcane armor, I could have it cast on that item of clothing...

That IS a wonderful idea. I, myself, have made a half-cape out of patches of cloth from many different garments I have made for myself and others ( I am a rather accomplished seamstress.)

Also, I have found that, with the recent change in the nature of armor, a studded corset of the right design makes wonderful one-piece scholar armor, has beautiful shiny studs, and can be made to look like anything, without being any more encumbering or uncomfortable than any other good, sturdy corset.

Anything you choose, I would be delighted to help you brainstorm, find, or make a suitably beautiful piece of armor to protect a dear and distant sister. You may dream back to me publicly or privately whenever you wish.

Warmth and light be upon you always,

I can also recommend Natalia's services... her clothing is tasteful (by our standards of course!), colorful, functional, and protective.

Well worth its weight in gold... double so as it is light!

For myself, I have chosen to rely on a tabard, heavily padded and quilted. Though mine is drab for my liking, would be very easy to sew something more colorful.
