Okay, my hasty was pudding.

Official answer is no, neither candy nor pumpkins will serve a supernatural or superfunctional purpose this event per the main plot line. However, pumpkins can provide cool atmosphere and candy has been known to satiate hungry NPCs, so don't consider this an admonition, simply a non-mandate.
