How was the world created?

I know the topic of religion has been debated before, and that references to religion or to a God or Gods remains taboo under the Alliance rules.

But how do characters and all the people of the in-game world believe that the world originated? Are there certain creation myths associated with certain races? I find it incredibly difficult to believe (read impossible) that they simply wouldn't care, or would not seek to explain their existence, as ever culture since time immemorial has possessed its various creation myths.

Are all the inhabitants of Fortannis assumed to be darwinists?

This would be on a chapter by chapter, race by race, character by character basis. There is no overall unifying theory as to how the world was created. Just like there is no overall accepted theory as to where magic comes from.

At least none that is of public knowledge. I'm sure that Mike has a good chuckle with each new theory that comes out. ;)

Hmm, ok. I guess I've just never heard anything on the subject via chapter packet, race packet, or in game conversation. I guess part of my question though, albeit not asked in the best way perhaps, is does this question fall under the blanket of religion? Is it all-right for a character to discuss their views on the origins of their world, or people? What if that story involves them being brought into existence by some being?

I ask, because I feel this question slightly blurs the lines. On the one hand, the desire to discover origins is natural, and people instinctively try to follow a path to its beginning. It would seem strange to ignore this subject or presume that the people of a certain world are uninterested in its answer. On the other hand, traditionally, the explanations made for these beginnings have often been closely tied to religion or the belief in deific beings.

Here's the 'easy out' that I generally use when pressed:

The four foundation elements (Flame, Ice, Stone, and Lightning) and the four magistratium elements (Earth, Chaos, Life, and Death) require a place to interact amongst themselves, and this world is it. All the creatures here were originally made from one or more of these elements, and as they've interacted they've become the creatures that exist today. The elemental planes have always existed and always will.

This has just enough holes in it that you can elaborate on it considerably and argue with people all you want, but it doesn't require faith in any kind of creator (you can chalk up the overall existence of the world to any number of creatures or groups of creatures, most of which you can summon with the correct ritual scrolls, so there's no faith required).

Aren't the four magistratium elements Order, Chaos, Life, and Death? At least those are what are you can summon from the Summon Magistarium scroll. Or is our database out of date?

I believe it is OK to believe something or someone created the world and people as long as you don't worship it.

Oh you can do all that...as long as you don't call it religion. ;) ;)

Mike V, Jesse G, John F, Patrick VR, Heidi Hooper and myself sat around in my dining room, drew a map and named it Fortannis.

Oh, you meant IG. ;)

There are more things in Earth and Chaos, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

I think you're right. Chaos, Life, and Death I had for sure, but I threw on Earth 'cause it was the first thing that popped into my head as the opposite of Chaos. Totally forgot about Order.

Alright, thanks, that's pretty helpful and answers what I was asking fairly well.

To be fair, I only knew it because a similar conversation had come up locally and we couldn't remember if it was Earth or Order, either. The Scroll was the only definitive answer we could think of.
